First, here's what I'm using:
HP DVD200i burner
Nero v. 5.5.10.20
Fuji DVD+R disc
DVD Decrypter 3.1.4.0
IfoEdit 0.95
DVD Shrink 1.03
Tested DVD+R on:
GoVideo DVR 5000
Sony DVP-NS715p
Toshiba SD-2008U DVD Player
Toshiba MW24FM1 (TV/DVD/VCD combo)
And now here's the story:
Tried to backup my DVD by decrypting files to hardrive, used IfoEdit to
delete playback of FBI Warning, "R Rating" warning and other annoying
stuff like that, then compressed the DVD (originally 6.64 GB) using
Customize Streams setting in DVD Shrink. Burned a Fuji DVD+R disc using Nero's UDF/ISO compilation, and I did follow the instructions found in the guides section for UDF 1.02 compliant disc except I checked "force compatibility mode" in UDF tab. Tested the disc on Toshiba players, but keep getting a "please check disk" error. Tested the disc on Sony and GoVideo players, and it played perfectly.
I was about to give up until I put in a Phillips DVD+R of homemade movies that my uncle had given me into both Toshiba players, and to my amazement, that DVD+R worked perfectly. He had authored and burned it himself using Ulead DVD MOvie factory, but I don't know which version he used. What did Ulead Movie Factory do that Nero couldn't do? Can I make an image of my DVD backup files and burn it with Ulead? Do I need to switch to a different version of Nero (although the one I have is fairly recent)? Did IfoEdit screw something up when I saved the new .ifo file?
I don't think it is the burner, because I checked the DVD+RW website and found I don't need to chance the compatibility bitsettings. I think my DVD+R is ok, so I think that somehow Nero is screwing up the file system.
Already wasted three disks trying to figure out what the problem is. On
the first two discs I tried using Nero's DVD-Video compilation, then
turned to this forum and used the UDF/ISO compilation. I could try to re-burn with the "force compatibility mode" unchecked, but I don't see what good it would do unless someone out there had an explanation.
Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? Please help before I throw my computer and/or Toshiba DVD players out the window! Thanks.

After Dvd decrypter try using dvd2one then Nero. Select DVD video which uses UDF/ISO only tick ISO level 1 & ISO 9660 undo everything else. Also try changing your book type read . http://dvdplusrw.org/resources/bitsettings.html

you might also try burning as dvd-video rather than a UDF disc with Nero - ever since I upgraded to 5.5.10.20, I've had no problems (prior to that I was burning UDF 1.02 files).

Housepig Records
out now:
Various Artists "Six Doors"
Unicorn "Playing With Light" -
To quote www.DVDplusRW.org:
"Note: HP DVD+R drives are known to write DVD-ROM identification to DVD+R discs by default, most others write DVD+R identification to DVD+R discs by default. "
The site also said that HP has come out with a utility to change the book type read, but I have yet to find it. I did get a copy of Ulead Movie Factory, and I'd like to create an file image using IMGTool, then burn with Ulead. Is there any specific reason why you would suggested DVD2One? I've used that program before, but I like DVDShrink better because you can customise compression of title sets and you can compress the extras to almost nothing and still keep the menus of the original disk. DVD2One allows either full disk or custom, but if you use custom, you lose the menus, and I'd like to keep as much of the original DVD as possible. Is there something wrong with DVD Shrink that you know of?
As for the Nero settings, I've tried that twice already, and it didn't work either time. I know the DVD-Video setting automatically selects ISO level 1 and ISO 9660, and I've manually set everything in UDF/ISO par the Nero UDF 1.02 guide found on this site
Thanks for the response. I give an update as soon as I can... -
PS I also download the Bitsetter program found on the site, but the results for my burner came back "unknown" for both DVD+R and +RW.
I'm sure it's of use to someone though, so I figured I'd post the link:
http://dvdplusrw.org/resources/bitsettings_pc.html
It also mentions that you can change the book read in Nero versions 5.5.10.15+, but only for DVD+RW (at least in my case - didn't have the option when I put in a DVD+R) -
I found HP's Compatibility Utility after all:
http://h20015.www2.hp.com/en/softwareDownloadIndex.jhtml?lc=en&softitem=dv-6799-2&sw_lang=en
To quote HP: "DVD+R discs in the default "mode" are highly compatible with most players and cannot be altered with this utility."
I know for a fact through the owners manuals of my two Toshiba players that they do not play DVD+RW at all. I'm assuming that HP burners stamp the DVD-Rom designation on all DVD+R discs. After all, that's what I read in the "Book Type Field" section of DVDplusRW.org. It HP burners don't designate a DVD+R disc as DVD-Rom, then I'm basically screwed. I can't confirm this either way though.
BTW, just to clarify, I have burned discs in Nero both with DVD-Video and DVD-DUF/ISO to no avail. -
Just upgraded to Nero 5.5.10.28. How do I access the compatibility mode setting?
-
When I changed my Dvd book type I used Nero. You can check what book type your disc is recorded in by selecting recorder then medium-info you will see it along the top ( FILE, EDIT, VIEW, RECORDER, EXTRAS, WINDOW,) . If your dvd+rw is not Rom change it . And before burning tick the box for book type dvd rom.

Nero still sucks no matter how many updates they release.Use DVDDecrypter to burn or I recommend NTI CD Maker 6 Platinum.
http://store.yahoo.com/software-blowouts/totbur60plat.html
BTW..Ulead products use NTI writing engine. -
BTW, I can change the type for DVD+RW, but it doesn't work for DVD+R. I actually thought Nero was the best burner out there until I ran into this problem. I tested my DVD+R's in a PS2, and they worked in that too. For some reason, though, they just don't work in Toshiba, although one of my DVD players is from 1998.
Anyway, I was thinking of making a file image and burning that. Any suggestions for an image make prog? My first bet would be to use IMGTool, but I hear it uses the Nero recorder and might not be the way to go. Also, does anyone have any comments on Stomp Recordnow Max? I keep reading the posts in these forums, and RecordNow seems to be gaining popularity for disgruntled Nero users.
Thanks for the suggestions! In the meantime, I might have a talk with the Toshiba tech support and see if they have any solutions... -
The DVD BitSetter can be downloaded from www.DVDplusRW.org
You can set both the +R and +RW as it were a DVD-ROM.
BUT
If you try setting with empty tray or blank disc inside you get error message. Do it with the tray ejected or a non-blank DVD inside
Also check the aspi driver setting in the corner.
And have the latest firmware updated. -
As it turns out, the problem was with Nero. After attempts with Nero's DVD-Video and DVD-UDF failed, I went ahead and burned an image of my files with DVD Decrypter. Needless to say, it worked perfectly (almost), except with a new problem that probably happened when I was editing the .ifo file in IfoEdit:
https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=536149#536149
I don't know what it is with Nero, but then again, my Toshiba sd-2008 is almost five years old. I can't expect software to work perfectly in every situation with no bugs or glitches. Chances are Ulead and RecordMax will work just as well, but that will require further testing...
