PAL signal to a Sony XBR HDTV

I'm quite anal and a little concerned about my HDTV. I recently put a PAL SVCD in the player and switched the player output to PAL the television started to flicker crazily and I quickly turned it off. Can I damage my TV by sending it such a signal....and on normal TVs I have sent PAL signals to without a prob....should I plug the player into a non HD connection and try again?

I guess no one knows then!? if a PAL signal could damage a HDTV?
