Not sure if I should post this here or in the newbie section, so forgive me if I am in wrong place.
I have downloaded two movies and when I try to preview them on Real Player, Media Player or the DIV X player, I can't get anything. The one movie actually says DVD rip.xvid-deity and the other is avi video. When I try to encode with TMPGEnc, I get a message that says something about FOURCC code XVID. To extract the wav files, virtual dub or vdub-mp3-freeze come up with unrecognized files, but GoldWave will extract, or at least I think it does. I have gone to several XVID sites and get info about downloading one thing or another, but can't seem to figure out how to use them. They say something about being decoders, but that just does not help me much.
Can anyone tell me anything about this FOURCC code XVID, and how to get around the problem so I can make the downloads into VCD movies.
Or should I just scrap those two downloads and start all over.
Thanks
Mistress Diana

Tried this xvid codec?
http://a-a.mine.nu/progs/codecs/xvid-04102002-1.exe
more mirrrors here
http://www.filemirrors.com/search.src?file=XviD-04102002-1.exe
just run the install. -
Thank you for the site to get the xvid codec, downloaded it, and can now play movie through media player, etc. Have not tried to encode yet, as have something else encoding right now.
Wish I could say that my other movie problem was solved, but all I get when I try to play it is a black screen, but will try to run it again through TMPGEnc and see what kind of message I get.
Thanks again for your help.

Use gspot for avi films. It will tell you what video and audio codecs are needed. Download it from the tools section of this web page.

I ran gspot and got this information Video Format Codec 4cc -RGB
name BI-RGB Raw Bitmap Status No codec needed. The audio says no audio channels.
I went to tools on this site, checked Codecs, did not find anything like this. What am I missing. I tried again to play in Media Player and I get a black screen and no sound. When I move the slider bar, it shows amount of time for video, and then says Playlist Playlist 1 and clip (with movie title name).
Thanks again

If I'm not mistaken the video is not compressed which is why it says no codec needed. I believe that "raw bitmap status" verifies that. Maybe someone else can clarify that. If gspot says "no audio channel" chances are it has no audio file. It could be that whoever encoded the film screwed up and instead of getting a compressed film he or she got an uncompressed "nothing" which is why your screen is black. Maybe someone else on this board can enlighten us.
