  1. I captured a vhs tape as one 2 hour avi file and encoded as a DVD compliant mpegII (352x480) with CBR of 4000. Is there a way to create a DVD from this file ?

I've tried Nero 5.5.10 and Sonic MyDVD ver 4.0. I've created DVDs with smaller mpeg files fine with MyDVD but I can not with this large mpeg file...

    Suggestions ?

  2. I use NeoDVD Plus to do what you want. I start with a 4 to 6GB capture file and NeoDVD lets me have a menu and set chapter points then will burn the DVDR for me or simply put the DVD complient files on my hard drive.

Any decent DVD authoring package should import this file. NERO is just a burning program, so doesn't do what you want. I don't know why it doesn't, but MyDVD should be able to do this... maybe you need to select a DVD template or something in your program. Is the file multiplexed or is it in elementry streams?

  4. The file is multiplexed...

    Thanks

  5. But what if I just want to burn the 4 gb mpeg file to a DVD without any menus ?

All I do to create a CVD and burn it with Nero is drag the mpegII file into Nero and burn it. It works fine .... can't I do the same thing to create a DVD with menus ?

Yes, but you cannot use Nero. You must use a dvd authoring tool like dvd moviefactory, neodvd or some other(you can just drag the mpeg and burn).

In practice, the "DVD" file you mention is, as you say, a multiplexed program stream. You can demultiplex it with Tmpgenc's MPEG Tools option in the File menu into the video and audio stream.

You can then use IFOEdit, select DVD-Author->Author New DVD and in the form that appears import the video and audio streams. There are guides in the HowTo section to help you with IFOEdit and how to create a DVD with it.

For a single movie, no menus, IFOEdit is perhaps the simplest tool.

(You also need a tool to record. Nero should be fine once you have a proper VIDEO_TS folder created with files inside...)
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

  8. Just a note about MyDVD - when you "get video" it does not accept 352x480 as compliant video and re-encodes it to 720x480. I do not know what it does to the bit rate. This makes your file too large and the burn button will go inactive (also look at space remaining). It will capture at 352x480 though. (strange to me)

If MyDVD does not import and says that the file is "Non-Compliant", then MyDVD is in error. 352x480 is a valid MPEG2 DVD resolution (for NTSC). I would complain to the MyDVD people (Sonic?).

  10. Yes the MpegII file is 352x480...

    Cheers & thanks

  11. I did not mean that 352x480 is a non-compliant format only that MyDVD does not use this resolution on video encoded by other programs and reencodes it without telling you. Their manual lists the space on an 4.7 GB DVD with the uniformative terminology of "Good, Better and Best" (60, 120, and 180 min). See the following excert.
"These durations are only for video captured in MyDVD. If you use files from other sources, such as AVI files, MyDVD converts the files using the "Best" quality setting, which means you can fit about 60 minutes of video onto a 4.7 GB DVD."
