  1. I am using (half) of dvd2svcd to convert avi files to an Encoded_Video_CCE_PAL.mpv file and an AC3 audio file.

This system works fine if i convert NTSC to NTSC, but if i tick the option 'convert NTSC to PAL' CCE 2.5 crashes part way through the process, anyone got any clues please? or even an alternate way of preparing AVI's for DVD authoring.

I am familiar with tmpgenc but cant live with the jerky output produced when converting to PAL from NTSC source.

    Thanks,

    Messa

In TMPGenc, use the Do Not Frame Rate Convert, and set your output to your desired framerate. This will speed up, or slow down the video, without dropping any frames. You will need to convert your audio seperately to avoid loss of audio sync. I would suggest BeSweet, and the BeSweet GUI (PAL to FILM option, or FILM to PAL option).

If you want a faster way, just use AVISynth, and the AssumeFPS command. Example:

    AssumeFPS(23.976,False)
    or
    AssumeFPS(25,False)

The audio still needs to be converted using BeSweet. The change in framerate is noticable if you try to use the output audio from AVISynth.

Just for your info, the False parameter tells AVISynth to ignore the audio sync. If you set it to True, AVISynth will also speed up your audio (or slow it down), to meet the new video frame rate. This can cause a noticable change in pitch, which is why I suggested you use BeSweet to treat the audio. It changes the audio length without changing the pitch.

Hey thanks DJ - I wasn't aware of that. I usually use BeSweet, but had sort of made my mind up to switch to goldwave (and I'll never be able to work out how to adjust the pitch in that )

The output quality is excellent. I certainly can't tell that it's been stretched. I swear by it (although I'm sure Goldwave could do the same, but I'm betting it doesn't have a one-click PAL -> NTSC option

Dead right there - you need a calculator ! And you need to do a step at a time too (Open, Shorten, save WAV, then convert to MP2 with another tool)

    Maybe I'll stick with BeSweet

Just remember, you'll need the BeSweet GUI, as it has the one-click drop down menu for PAL to FILM, and vice versa. Ensure you get the latest version of both, as the older versions of the BeSweet GUI were kinda glitchy.
