I have been following this guide:
http://www.dvdr-digest.com/articles/articles.php?article_id=18&page=4
and I have followed a similar guide and I am really confused with this part:
Can someone explain exactly which files go on which disc? We'll now have to manually split the DVDs by copying over the rest of the files. These are the files you need to copy :
Don't overwrite any files that IfoEdit has already copied over for you to both discs.
First of all, copy the VIDEO_TS set of files (VIDEO_TS.BUP, VIDEO_TS.IFO, VIDEO_TS.VOB - these are your "menu" files) to both "discs" (the 'Disc1' and 'Disc2' directories) if they are not there already.
Copy all VTS_XY_0.VOB (eg. VTS_05_0.VOB) and all associated IFO/BUP files (eg. VTS_05_0.IFO, VTS_05_0.BUP) over to both discs. Note that this includes the _0.VOB file for the title set you just split (but don't copy the .IFO/BUP files for this set).
If your main movie's title set is not the VTS_01 set, then you'll have to copy over this set of files to both discs.
Now put the rest of the files on disc two, since we've already calculated and split the movie so that most of it is on disc 1. The basic strategy is to put as much of the movie on disc 1 as possible, and leave disc 2 for the extra features.
In my case, here is my directory:
According to DVD Decrypter, VTS_01 is the main movies files.

2 Dir(s) 27,061,317,632 bytes free
So, in my case, what files do I copy into which folder that IFOEdit created.

Let me be more specific:
Is says:
Copy all VTS_XY_0.VOB (eg. VTS_05_0.VOB) and all associated IFO/BUP files (eg. VTS_05_0.IFO, VTS_05_0.BUP) over to both discs. Note that this includes the _0.VOB file for the title set you just split (but don't copy the .IFO/BUP files for this set).
Then it says:
Now put the rest of the files on disc two,
My question is: What does it mean when it says "the rest of the files"
What files ? It said copy all the VTS_XY_0.VOB/IFO/BUP to both discs.
Also, why would I copy the extra content to "BOTH" discs. That doesn't make sense to me. -
You're not alone. I work with video professionally, but this IFO crap gives me a headache, and I gave up months ago. It's hard enough, but they always change as the technology grows, so what one guide may say may not be what works in a month.
I'm not online anymore. Ask BALDRICK, LORDSMURF or SATSTORM for help. PM's are ignored. -
If you just want main movie only split onto two dvd-rs use dvdtoolbox it's free.

here another way using ifo edit with only the main movie
here a trick if u want dvd9 to5 superfast burning and 100% video quality all the time and u don't want to spend no more money althrough it takes 2 discs. rip only the movie in file mode with smartripper, figure out how many of the vob files will fit on one 4.7 disc and put them in one folder, then put the other vobs in another folder. use ifo edit to create ifos for first folder, then when u are done rename the vob files in the other folder to vts 01 and so on (example for vob vts_01_5,vts_01_6,vts_01_7 rename them tovts_01_1,vts_01_2,vts_01_3 ) next open ifo edit to create ifos for the second folder and burn with your favorite program (it what i call dvdxcopy for free. it's kinda what they do)
now dvd 95 copy is probaly faster and u probaly will never use this. but i just threw that out there because that was one of my tricks to burn dvds before ic7 came out. shoot i used to mix different dvd stuff at the end the second disc like old sanford and son episodes that i had on store brought dvds. and i know dvd 95 copy can't do that (mix diffent dvd movies that is)
this was copied from an old post of mine -
If I'm not mistaken you have these in each dir:
VIDEO_TS.BUP
VIDEO_TS.IFO
VTS_01_0.BUP
VTS_01_0.IFO
VTS_01_1.VOB
VTS_01_2.VOB
VTS_01_3.VOB
VTS_01_4.VOB
So all you need to do, is to copy these menu vobs from the titlesets IfoEdit has processed (to each dir)
VIDEO_TS.VOB
VTS_01_0.VOB
and the rest (your extras/intros) (also to each dir)
VTS_02_0.BUP
VTS_02_0.IFO
VTS_02_0.VOB
VTS_02_1.VOB
VTS_03_0.BUP
VTS_03_0.IFO
VTS_03_0.VOB
VTS_03_1.VOB
VTS_04_0.BUP
VTS_04_0.IFO
VTS_04_0.VOB
VTS_04_1.VOB
Seems quite straightforward.

robinmthomas,
I use the guide from doom9 (http:\\www.doom9.org/mpg/ifoedit-2dvdrs.htm). Anyway, after the split using Ifoedit I've added these notes, based on my understanding of had to manually allocate the remaining extras (according to the guide).
1. VTS_01_0.VOB, VTS_01_0.IFO & VTS_01_0.BUP Need to Be Present on both discs (given that the main movie is in title set 01).
2. All VTS_*_0.VOB, VTS_*_0.IFO & VTS_*_0.BUP Need to Be Present on both discs.
3. VTS_TS_0.VOB, VTS_TS_0.IFO & VTS_TS_0.BUP Need to Be Present on both discs.
4. Allocate the remaining VTS_*_X.VOB (for the extras) to disc 1 and / or disc 2 depending on available space. (BTW, if a title set for an extra contains more than one .VOB (e.g., VTS_02_1.VOB, VTS_02_2.VOB) both these need to go on the same disc. Don't split them up.
5. LESSON Learned. Sometimes an extra title set will look like this (for an example with an extra in title set 05) VTS_05_0.IFO, VTS_05_0.BUP & VTS_05_1.VOB (and will not have a VTS_05_0.VOB), where the VTS_05_1.VOB is large (say 900,000,000 bytes) and where you don't have room to put VTS_05_1.VOB on disc 1 (only on disc 2). I've found that RecordNow will refuse to burn disc 1. To work around this, I open Notepad and create an empty VTS_05_1.VOB file and I save that file to disc 1. (In some cases you may also need to create a empty VTS_05_0.VOB). Anyway, RecordNow will burn the disc and I've found that they play in my Toshiba SD2800.
6. Like you I too was overwhelmed initially when I started using Ifoedit to split and create two DVDRs from a DVD-9. But after doing it a couple of times I found that it wasn't that bad. A word to the wise ... until you get really proficient at it use DVD+/-RWs to practice and get it right. After you get it right then burn to DVDRs ... It'll save you (or it did me) from making some expensive coasters. -
DVDToolbox is the way to go -- Holy cow! This program is exactly what I wanted. Thanks for all the replies, but I am going to start using DVDToolbox from now on

robinmthomas,
You might also try the "DVD 2 Dvd-r With All the Menus Guide" in the File Library/Tutorials of DVD-Education.com by linking to http://www.dvd-education.com/file_library.asp?showmethecat=12
It's flawless! Never failed me!

i just love ifoedit so much . i use to experiment with it in so many different ways to make dvds before ic7, dvd 2one , dvd shrink, etc came out.
i used to put old episode dvd vobs, say like a half hour of the jefferson, archie bunker, and or fat albert here and there on the folder of the 2 dvd that i about to make (which usually have 2 to 3 gig left after the end of the second part of the movie).
i then use ifoedit to create new ifo for my 2nd dvd folder which shows the end of my movie and an episode or 2 or 3 of my favorite shows so i really get use out of that 2nd disc
i bet dvd toolbox can't do that
