  1. I've got a creative labs 8x4x32 cd-burner. I've already burnt around 120 cd's. How long do these things last?

Assuming your talking about the drives themselves, my last two Ricoh's did about 50 CD's a piece, and lasted a year each. My new Yamaha is only 4 months old, but I suspect it will die a couple days before my extended warranty runs out

I own an HP model myself (8200i model), had it since last year in May. For all the VCD's, MP3, Audio stuff I've burned, I'm suprised it still works great with no problems! I would guess I've burned about 400 - 500 CD-Rs to this day. I think I'll stick with this brand in the years to come

  5. Usually they're rated for hours of operation. For example, I think my Plextor is rated for 100,000 hours of operation. Using your recorder for read-only tasks reduces the effective life, which is why it is good to have a second CD or DVD drive for playback purposes.

These things are about as reliable as a SCUD missle.

I have an old Teac , I said I would replace it with a more modern one when it finally stops. I switch it off when not in use !, 800 + disks and its still working 100% I'll never get a new one at this rate

  8. I have one of the famous HP9100i that will burn the 99min. CD-R's to 99min., I bought it in June 2000, I burn at least 10 CD-R's a week, I won't stop using it until it quits. Still under the 3 year extended warranty.

i have that same model. 4x4x32. i have also burned around 400 CD's and only 3 coasters. gotta love that. and i am using generic cdr's too.

you can get 16x10x40 here in canada for $195 ($130US). i remember i paid $200 for mine in may 2000. as tempting as it is to buy a burner that will do cd's that fast, i think i will keep burning with mine until it dies. i'm not in that big of a hurry to have my cdr's.

  10. I also had an HP 9100i and used it to burn + read over 700 cdr's without any faults - I then sold it on as I couldn't burn the 99minute cdrs

So I would expect the lifetime of most cd writers to be arround the 1000 mark.

  11. They really should last a LOT longer than 1000 discs...

Well, I hope there is something wrong with your PC rather than your drives! I'd just bought myself a new Ricoh burner...

My old 2x burner is still chugging away and I must have burnt 500+ discs with it now.

    Regards.

My old Acer (rebadged Phillips) lasted about 1.5 years under normal household usage. It still reads CD's just fine but only reliably writes CD-RW and is so slow I boiught a new one (another Phillips). The new one works fine as long as you use certain CD-R's (it's brand particular).

i bought a refurb'd acer 8x4x32x over a year and a half ago and must have burned over 300 discs with already.

just this past weekend though, i'd left the tray open and accidently knocked the caddy sideways off-track with my knee (case under desk on floor). i tried all day to reseat the caddy but the darn thing wouldn't eject or slide in anymore.

so, i picked up a sony 12x8x32x at my local circuitcity for $99 plus a $30 rebate, figuring it wasn't a bad deal for $70. just when i was about to install the sony, i figured i'd try reseating the acer caddy once more and BINGO!, it's working all over again. so, i returned the sony.

i'm shootin' for 1000 burned discs on that acer now...

That's an awesome story, hitechjunkie! What good luck you have.

I personally use a Creative Labs CDRW Blaster 6x4x24 to burn. I got it for free from fixing a friend's computer. Personally, I have burned about 250+ CDRs and CDRWs on this thing myself. I got it about a year ago... well... 11 months, cause I got it the same month that I got Windows 2000, which was October. So this thing has been with me for 11 months, and it still works fine. I don't know how many discs my brother burns with it, but he has his own spindles of CDRs, and before it was in this PC, it was in a friend's PC... overall, I would estimate that this burner has burned atleast 600 CDRs and/or RWs.
