I have seen this question showing up alot recently, its a very simple answer.

Lets take a look at what svcd and dvd actually are:

SVCD : Mpeg 2 video with a bitrate up to 2.6Mbits/s
DVD : Mpeg 2 video with a bitrate up to 9.8Mbits/s

if you video was on DVD-R(w) media it would have to be encoded for dvd, but you could easily put a lower bitrate on your video to get more on the disc. It would be just like putting a VHS tape on SLP, you sacrifice quality for extra room, not that I am saying SVCD is bad or anything, just not as good as DVD. Hope that answers your question

  3. Hello.

As long as your SVCD video file conforms to one of the supported DVD video resolutions it would work fine. The audio will need to be resampled to 48khz though as the majority of DVD authoring software wont accept a 44khz file.

The DVD specification states the following for mpeg2 video files:

SIF Standard: 352x240 NTSC or 352x288 PAL
    Half D1: 352x480 NTSC or 352x576 PAL
    Cropped D1: 704x480 NTSC or 704x576 PAL
    Full D1: 720x480 NTSC or 720x576 PAL

If your video asset isn't in one of these resolutions it wont be accepted for DVD authoring.
