  1. My son's basic training graduation is on VHS. I would like to get it on dvd to send copies to him and the family. What would be the best way to do this? I have video capture card but after I get this on the HD what processes do I go through to get ot back to dvd?

    Thanks in advance!

Lordsmurf has a nice guide on how to go from VHS to DVD.

    My process is simple.

    1. Capture the file to an AVI using the Huffy Codec.

    2. Load the AVI into TMPGEnc, use the "Ghost Reduction", "Noise Reduction" and "Sharpen Edge" filters if you think the AVI is not good.

    3. Load the resulting MPG2 file into DVD-Lab and setup the menus, chapters.

    4. Either burn the DVD in DVD-Lab or in Nero.

(Huffy, and TMPGEnc and DVD-Lab are available in the tools section)

Alternatively, buy a copy of Ulead DVD Moviefactory and just do it. One bit of software that does everything for you and guides you through the process so you don't have to understand about codecs, authoring, encoding, etc.

For the price it will save you having to climb a very steep learning curve.

  4. Besides Ulead another 'all in one package' is neoDVD (which goes for $50). You can capture directly to MPEG2, then just author and burn. It really doesn't get any easier than that.

There are several guides to the left under 'capture' for how to get the video to your HD.

Then look at the 'convert' guides to convert the captured avi to MPEG2 (unless you captured in MPEG2 to start with).

Finally look at the 'author' guides to author the DVD (and burn it).

Once you have one DVDR burnt. You can easily make copies with DVD Decrypter.

I have tried Ulead DVD MF,
YES, it is easy to use, YES, it is all in one.

NO, it does not give top quality output.
I have been encoding from VHS tapes to DVDs via TMPGEnc and with it's filtering, the output is as good or sometimes better than the input. Have have yet to produce a DVD with Movie Factory that was even as good as the VHS source.

You sacrifice quality when you get speed.
