I have a 550ishMB AVI I'd like to convert to MPEG1 so I can burn it as a VCD (It's about 70 minutes long). I use TMPGEnc and followed the tutorials step by step (including using Virtual Dub so there aren't any audiosync problems). 3 hours later, I have the finished product - at half size.

I'm not sure why, but is it related to Advanced Settings > Source Aspect Ratio? I changed it a few times to see if the results would differ but it still looks the same size.

    What am I missing?

  2. Define 'half-size'

VCD's are 352x240(ntsc)-- so if you are looking at it through windows media then it will look smaller, but you can always hit the fullscreen button and it plays in fullscreen on dvd's.

However if you mean its cutting some of the actual frames so you don't see all the of what you original saw on the avi then most likely you need to re-encode from the original avi and under the Advanced tab-->Video Arrange Method, you should set it to "keep aspect ratio"

Sorry; I meant half size by what I saw in WMP. Played the AVI version, then the newly formed MPG version and saw that the MPEG version was much smaller.

So I was a bit worried that I just made a mistake (creating a lower res file instead of a lateral transfer). But, again, I'm a newb. VCDs played on my comp via DVD software don't look that bad at all when played in wondowed or full screen format.

Tangential: Is that because DVD software plays at a lower res? When I start WINDVD for example the moniter flickers as if the screen resolution changes. Is that how SVCD/VCD quality is kept by lowering the moniter res?
