I am using VirtualDub to capture some VHS tapes I recorded 10+ years ago from favorite music programs we watched on TV and my kids high school rodeo . The first couple of VHS tapes I captured ok and I took four 20 minute segments and burned to DVD .... they look nice. The following tapes however proved troublesome. The preview during capture with VirtualDub ALWAYS looks great but the playback reveals a wide white band through the center that covers about 50% of the video. I've tried manipulating the settings but no success. I put another tape in and it's just fine .... it's only certain tapes. Now the music was broadcast televison over the air, and the rodeo tapes I took myself, and the video playback is always great ...... but there has to be something written to these tapes that overwrites the center section with a white band while capturing. Is it possible that Macrovison can be transmitted over the air waves? It doesn't seem like it could ..... but it looks like Macrovison. Is it possible that some of the blank tapes I used with my VCR recorder came with Macrovison written to them? This is really puzzling me, and I have several dozen VHS tapes I won't be able to transfer to DVD. I even bought a Sima Video Copymaster .... which was a waste of money. VirtubalDub has a setting that says "Set Striping System" but I don't have the plug in to see if that has anything to do with it. I thought it might be the brand of tape but with 2 identical VCR tapes (brand and imprinted #), one is good, and one isn't. Any thoughts appreciated.

  2. Hi Gritz,
You didn't say what you capture with but on the outside chance that you are using Nvidia drivers for your capture card this fixed the same problem for me as posted by another forum member in here.

Remove the current Nvida Video Capture (Universal) driver and then install the older version 1.08. No more Macrovision.

  3. I had this problem on some of my old VHS tapes. It seems that they have a slight sync problem which is picked up as copy protection. I bought a video stablizer off Ebay and that seemed to take care of my problems.

jwilson56 ........ I think you're right but mine must be so far off that even the Sima VideoCopyMaster can't fix the problem. I don't know about the problem you had but this is a pure white solid band wiping out about 50% of the picture through the center section. From what I've read Macrovision gives more of a "flashing" and "darkening" of the video as you watch it, in fact I've seen this on some of the newest DVDs that I've purchased and I was able to override this with a setting for my Apex 3200 DVD Player. I've even gone to the Macrovision site and nowhere does it say anything about a "solid pure white" band running through the video, but talks more of the "flashing" colors. If this is a definite sign of Macrovision there is no published description of this bizare result that I can find ... unless I've just missed it? I'm now wondering if one of those Time Based Correctors would fix the problem? Anyway ... I appreciate your response.

Do a search on the forum for "White Band".

I know that subject has come up before and it's always been associated with video capture card drivers or software drivers that needed to be updated or reinstalled.
There's not much to do but then I can't do much anyway.

Hmmm .... turned a blank on the search. The band looks like this. With VirtualDub open and in the capture mode when I click on "Preview" it looks like this ....... and this is the way it's captured. ugghhh.
