Personally, I think they will both co-exist. But today when I went to Target and Wal-Mart, things are looking very good for the format. I went to Wal-Mart last week and they had 10 PK of Maxell DVD-Rs. This week, I went there and they are getting several different size packs of Maxell (10PK is $23.99, 5PK is $12.99), Memorex, Sony (3PKs are $7.99), and Verbatim DVD-R. Not only that, but they are getting Sony DVD-RAMs (3 for $12.99). I went to Target and they had DVD-Rs Memorex, Verbatim, TDK, and some brand I never heard of. They DVD+Rs, but for the first time I am seeing more a choice available in DVD-R instead of DVD+R. While Best Buy is a big buisness and has electronics we will never see in Wal-Mart, it can't touch Wal-Mart, financially (Wal-Mart is the Microsoft of stores).

  2. I wrote a letter to Best Buy a few weeks ago about the unwise decision to stop selling DVD-R Media. I'm used to seeing overstocked + media lately everytime I go (they stopped - media awhile back).

Going in today I was more than suprised to see they were selling LOTS of - media again!! Every single unit sold out... still the same + media to the side.

Personally, I hate having a loose war. If we're going to have a war, I say it should be as tight as possible.

    Hello

I haven't been to any local WAL-MART for a while so I am curious to know if any in my area are stocking DVD-R discs. I've been buying a 10 pack (in standard size jewel cases) of 2x Maxell DVD-R discs at BEST BUY for a price of $35 per 10 pack ... just recently BEST BUY lowered the price to only $25 for these (as well as a similar packaged 10 pack of 2x FUJI which I've used) but both the Maxell and the Fuji discs are almost always out-of-stock. Very annoying.

I just checked Walmart.com and could not find any DVD recordable media although they did have 3 models of DVD burners including two by HP and one by LG which was a DVD-R/RW (the HP of course were DVD+R/W).

They also carry a couple stand alone DVD recorders as well on the web site.

I was able to find some CD-R/W media but no DVD recordable media at all

I agree with MJPollard, loose wars can get messy.

Its good to hear Walmart is starting to finally carry media for DVD burners, I've not seen any around here the few times I've looked, but I've looked because you never know when you might need 5 disk at 4am. GO SUPERWALMART!

On the other hand I never, ever, EVER thought DVD-R was losing any real or imagined war, its too darned popular.

If Walmart is starting to carry DVD-R media, that means Sam's Club can't be far behind.

I've been purchasing my CD-R media from them for years and it's always equal to or less expensive than you could purchase it online. And very convenient.

  9. same here. you can find a lot more DVD-R than DVD+R.. the only place that hold +R media have the same for -R (4 pack Maxell) and -R are cheaper (12$Can vs 16$Can for 4 DVD-R or +R)

It's nice to see price droping in my town

I never thought DVD-R was going to loose the war....

My local SuperWalMart has NO dvd media. No plus no minus no ram no nothing. But they do have DVD+R burners. They have no intentions of getting any media nor will they order any. So I bought my DVD-Rs from Office Depot. Best Buy will only laugh at you if you ask for DVD-R media. Plus if you ask them nothing they have works on a mac. Idiots.

"If Walmart is starting to carry DVD-R media, that means Sam's Club can't be far behind."

Actually SAMS does carry DVD media, only it's Verbatim DVD+R. tgpo, it won't be long until the other Wal-Marts have the DVD-R media. The Wal-Marts that did not have any DVD-Rs yet, had the scan barcodes for the items on the shelves. The Wal-Marts in my area just got all of their items last week. I go there quite a bit b/c I am always getting electronics or as my wife would say "wasting money"

FulciLives, Wal-Mart's price is $1.00 cheaper than BESTBUY on the 10PK Maxells. (Not much, but it is if you buy several). I think the best deal I have seen though is the 20PK TDKs for only $44.95. Even the tiny Wal-Mart in small town I work at from home has DVD-Rs.

  12. I was finally able to pick up a 15 pack of Verbatim DVD-R in Best Buy for 29.99, also got a 10 pack of Sony DVD-R in jewel cases for 24.98 at Staples, usually Staples only has Memorex 3 packs or Maxell 5 packs. Haven't seen any in the local Wal-Marts yet, but hopefully soon.

  13. Untill tomorow night, { Sat } Staples has had this week a 10 pack for 10 dollars after instant/mail rebates.

Its nice to see more places stocking media. That means the pipeline is starting to fill which I hope means after a while some price drops on media. A dollar to 80 cents a disk at a normal store non special sales price would be nice. With a special of 60 or 50 cents a disk for sales.

Wonder if this is the change over the industry been waiting for? Most mfg want to switch over to DVDR since CDR/RW have hit a wall in speed and price.
