rm to avi or mpg why such a huge size increase?

I tried to convert rm to avi or mpg. But the end result is a huge expansion of 5mg rm to ~50mg avi or mpg file. Why? How can I have the conversion to have the same quality and size of the original rm? Thank you very much.
