  1. I've been using Pinnacle Studio 8 Deluxe for a month now with no problems until yesterday.
I finished editing a 52-minute project, then went to make movie. Created a mpeg2 with no problems. I wanted to try a burn with Nero because Pinnacle Studio 8 Deluxe is so slow on rendering and burning. I discovered that Nero Burning ROM does not do DVD, so I tried to re-open the mpeg2 that I had already created in Pinnacle, however Pinnacle would not open the already created mpeg2. Eventually i gave in and had to re-create the mpeg2 again, then I was able to use create disk option.

Is this normal for Pinnacle? Has anyone else experienced this OR can someone clue me in why Pinnacle won't open a mpeg2 that was originally created in Pinnacle.

Is there a better/faster way to render and burn to disk (DVD) besides Pinnacle. I do like the Pinnacle Studio 8 editing tools, but would like a quicker mpeg2 creator and a faster way to render and burn.

  2. For faster encoding/authoring with quality similar to PS8, you can try neoDVD software.
This software sucks in term of editing but its value is in its high speed encoding/authoring, supports multiple movies in a single DVD but only 6 chapter points per movie. On a 1.2GHz system it only take 1X to encode and author a DVD. Burning DVD take extra time (depends on burning speed).
Here is the link to that site:

I still use PS8 for editing, but recently swiched to neoDVD for encoding and authoring. If speed is what you want, you will like this software.

  3. Redd.
The problem you are experiencing with the mpeg2 file is a bug with the PS8 Software. I believe there is a file size limitation of 2.8gigs any mpeg2 file greater than that will cause problems ( there may be some users that have not come across this problem) but most users have.
I read in some other post that sometimes it just takes a while to open the mpeg2 file, this is while it does the automatic scene detection and if you cancel it then you may have problems.
My recommendation would be to NOT bring in mpeg2 files back into PS8.

    Some suggestions:
    1. Edit in Studio8 then render back to AVI and use any combination of applications to author your DVD, like ktnwin suggested NeoDVD is one option.
    2. if you are not pressed for time then complete the whole process in Studio8, create DVD image to hard disk and let it render overnight.

Nero doesn't burn DVD's??? I believe that every version after version 4.5 will burn DVD's you just have to select DVD instead of CD when burning.

I haven't found that option (DVD) in Nero, maybe I'm not looking in the right place. I'll check it out again.

******Duh...Found it. Next question...If the created mpeg2 is burned on Nero, will it play as movie on stand alone DVD player?

    Thanks,

Yes, it should play on a set top DVD player as long as that player is capable of reading DVD-r's, and if the disc was authored correctly. I don't know if Nero can convert the raw MPEG file to a VIDEO_TS folder or not. I know with Record Now Max it won't let you burn the VIDEO_TS folder to disc if it is not in the proper spec, I'm not sure about Nero though it's been a while since I used it.

  7. When you say authored correctly...is this not done when the mpeg2 is created or is this an extra step in the rendering process?

    Thanks

No, once you have the MPEG-2 file you then need to bring that file into a authoring program such as maestro, DVDIt etc... then that program will take the MPEG-2 file and encode it into the VIDEO_TS folder that you need to burn onto a DVD disc so that it will be playable in a DVD player. You can't simply burn a MPEG-2 file on a DVD and play it, it needs to be authored and then create the VIDEO_TS folder, and that is what you burn onto the DVD.

Some DVD players actually can do that, but result of doing that is not DVD-Video disk.

MPEG1/2 ISO - is how they call it on this website when you are searching in DVD players list.

  14. Thanks guy's for all your help. So far Pinnacle Studio 8 Deluxe has worked fine for me right out of the box, except for that one problem with it not re-opening an mpeg2. I've made six successful disks so far so I've got nothing to complain about except my own inexperience. But with this forum I've learned tons. I did buy sclive for capturing because they don't have the audio sync problem that Pinnacle has.
I can see how you can get seriously hooked on this. I can see my savings account shrinking already. Have my eye on more serious video programs already.

    Thanks again,

  15. I used PS8 to do everything from capturing, editing, author and burn DVD. It works fine (quite slow but it works). I had trouble importing big MPEG-2 files. I have tried small ones (5 mins MPEG-2 clips), PS8 has no trouble to import and author them to DVD. But importing big ones take forever, PS8 seems to hang, everytime I moved the video slider to define chapter points. I never import MPEG-2 into PS8 from there on.

  16. So far all the DVD's I've made I've used presentation screens with transitions to start a movie, ie. Title, who's in it and so on. The edit job I working on now I'm using a menu and setting chapter points as well as the presentation screens with transitions. When a newly entered video clip reaches it's end on the time line the time line automatically returns to the beginning of the movie. I have to stop short of the end of the new inserted clip to add a transition or next clip. This did not happen when I wasn't using a menu. Should a Menu be added after the edited movie is complete and then add the chapter points?

    Thanks
