i just got the asus mother board a7n266-vm, pc2700 crucial 512mb, 60gig westdigi hardrive, amd 2400+,
i putted everthing together but the computer wont start.
when i press on the power button, i hear the case fan turn on and the power lite turns on for about 5sec then everything shuts down.
can someone help what could be the problem???

Make sure the memory chip/s are seated good then reset the cmos (usually a jumper on the motherboard) anf then try to boot.
-
You might a installed the heatsink incorrectly and the motherboard is preventing your cpu from being fried.
-
First verify chipfan is spinning.
Double check correct power switch connection, test by removing power switch leads and jump pins with small flatblade or plain jumper to briefly connect the two pins. Verify RAM insertion. Verify MOBO jumper settings.
RTFM. If this works, your switch may be hanging or improperly connected.
Then remove all cards, drive cables, and RAM from the MOBO. and disconnect all power to drives and case fans. Board, chip, fan, and power only. RTFM for beep codes with no RAM, some boards require RAM for power up. You must connect speaker for beep codes. Again manually switch the board.
If in this state it still powers down, your power supply may be bad or not enough wattage, Chip installed incorrectly or fried, or bad mainboard.
If it does work, add boards and cables ONE AT A TIME until problem is found.
Minimize the variables. -
Jacknjt,
First turn off the switch on the power supply. Unplug all your drives. ALL. Leave your CPU and RAM installed. ATX power supplies require a learning mode, for want of a better term for first boot up. If the switch was in the off position, they do not "learn". The switch should be in the "I" depressed position to start.
Again, unplug all the drives, remove the thin wires marked reset, take a small screwdriver or similar device and short the 2 pins the "reset" connector was on. This should start the computer, fans will spin up, etc. You should get a boot screen, no OS installed, something. Push the power button to shut down. Reconnect the drives. Restart the computer. You should be running.
I have had power supplies replaced because they did not start. I thought they were bad, and the vendor sent me new ones. One sent me a new one, and it was no good. I called and the tech guy advised me to try the above. It worked. I bought an Antec 400 watt replacement for my best machine. It didn't work. I did the above, and it worked. I was getting good power supplies replaced when there was nothing wrong with them.
Post if this helps.

LanEvo7,,
I don't think they've come up with a board that has a monitor fast enough to keep an AMD from frying. The monitor is good for 1 degree per second, and an AMD will heat to several hundred degrees within 15 seconds, as demo'd on Tech TV and others.
It's not shutting down to protect the CPU. -
Most of the time when I see that at work it is because the customer assembled the computer wrong.
a. Make sure the standoffs that mount the motherboard to the case are only positioned where the MB has holes for the mounting screws. (I've seen extra posts & I've seen MBs bolted securely to the metal with no standoffs).
b. If the Floppy drive power cable is offset by one pin you will have a 5 or 12 volt lead shorted through the drive, Yup seen that too.
In either case a or b the power supply will shut down to protect itself.
And of course the other advice given to only hook up the MB & Video card is a good starting point.
Or even new parts can be bad, not too often if bought retail....However I have seen a steady stream of customers at work with bad parts bought off of the Internet. Who can't get the new PC they assembled to run.
Good Luck, You have good brands of parts listed, ASUS, Western Digital, etc. Hopefully you didn't get sold a cheap , The power supply is important too. And the PS is one waythe vendors can cut corners on you.
Cheers -
Had the same problem after an upgrade, switched on and 5secs later switched off. Turned out the power supply wasn't powerful enough, needed 300W (had only 200W before)
Try running with only CPU, RAM and Graphics card/monitor connected. no usb stuff, no hard drives, no cd drives. -
thanks all for helping.
i cant seem to find the RESET jumper CMOS. this board is differnet.
i do see the cpu and ddram frequency 100 or 133mhz bus speed -
ALSO, no matter how i hook everthing up with the board only my MONITOR WONT SHOW ANYTHING. not thing monitor always in standby mode.
also i found a little problem, if i have the board only, when i hit the power button it turns on fine i hear the chassis fan turns on and stuff but still nothing on the monitor.
it would turn off after 5sec if i have the CPU on the board.
all i want is something on the screen to look at.((

I've had some cheap 300 watt power supplies that wouldn't start up an Athlon system. It has to do with the 5 volt supply at startup (it can hit 20 amps at peak) that thinks it sees a short. You need a real 300/350/400 watt supply to be sure. Try booting with just cpu/ram and video card, no drives.
To Be, Or, Not To Be, That, Is The Gazorgan Plan -
Hi! Jacknjt.
Have u checked the voltage of the power supply yet. Sometimes, the power supply is set to 230W instead of 115W.
If not, u have to set it to 115W. -

Your last statement about putting in the CPU and it shutting down in 5 sec. sounds like a bad CPU( had the same problem one time). Also look for the BIOS jumper(usually called JP4) and make sure it is not set to clear, some mobos ship with it in the clear position. -
Jacknjt:
I see people have mentioned to check to make sure the CPU fan is spinning, and it's heatsink is seated properly. There is one more thing related to the CPU heatsink/fan that could be causing the problem. Many motherboards require that the CPU fan be plugged into a specific fan header (socket.) The motherboard is set to look for an RPM signal on that specific fan header. If there is no RPM signal, the motherboard assumes that the CPU fan has failed and shuts down the system immediately. Make sure you have the CPU fan connected to the "CPU" fan header on your motherboard. If it is connected to any other fan header, your system may not start, or may shutdown almost immediately. -
Look at the board manual on page 29, it has an important note regarding the ATX power supply. The +5 volt standby lead should provide at least 10mA otherwise the system will be unstable or experience power up problems.

Now don't do what I advise without doing some research.... but I remember that I was reading somewhere that you can test mobo without memory (and COU ??? not sure about this) and other add on's. Also, try to take mobo out of your box. Sometimes you can make some short circuit by mounting it incorrectly. And yes.... RTFM... that might help too

when i have the cpu and its fan in, when the compu turns on the cpu fan doesnot spin only the case fan spin then everything shuts down. about 5-10secs. also i want to be able to see something on my MONITOR. the monitor always in standby mode. the mobo would stay on without the CPU but still no SCREEN on monitor.
could it be the bad CPU FAN??? -
Bet you the cmos jumper is set to clear in which case the power supply will never come on. I just went through this a month ago with a new motherboard shipped to me with the cmos jumper set to clear.
-
Like donpedro said, you should be able to test your motherboard without some of the components. by doing this your motherboard should give you warning signals as to what maybe missing. also make sure your MB is grounded properly. I had a friend go nuts because his MB was not set properly in the case.

the only problem i notice is MONITOR WONT TURNS ON AND NO POWER AFTER 5secs IF CPU IS ON BOARD.
i did try the motherboard only, it doesnot make any beeps and also no screen to monitor too. : ((( -

i cant find it, -
Do a search on the internet for the manufacturer of the motherboard then there will be a manual you may download for the specific model number of that motherboard.
-
Just downloaded the manual from ASUS. Follow the directions in Chapter 2: Hardware Information. Page 22 #5 Clear RTC Ram(CLR-Cmos). If this does not work try connecting up another CPU fan with RPM sensor to the CPU Fan connector and see if the computer starts. Don't leave it turned on very long or it can overheat the AMD CPU. It may be a bad or wrong type fan for the AMD CPU. I normally bench check my motherboards before I put them into the case. I place the mobo on a rubber mat, put in the CPU, fan, memory, and graphic card. Then I connect up the speaker, power supply, keyboard, and monitor. If it works then I put it in the case.
-
Attaching a pc speaker to the motherboard might give you a clue as to whats going if it gives out any beeps.
-
thanks all for helping and being patients.
i got it turned on and everything is good. ( the cpu wasnt in tight)
there's is one final problem. THE CPU FAN DOESNT SEEM TO KICK IN. i went into the bios and check the cpu temp it's at 50* C and keeps RISING. i dont see the FAN kick in. is it a defective FAN???
THANKS ALL AGAIN, could not do it without yall helps. -
It could be a bad fan, but check a couple things first. If there is a finger guard over the fan make sure it is not rubbing against the fan blade. You should be able to take a screwdriver or pencil and spin the fan blade by hand and it should spin freely i.e. several revolutions by itself. Also check the wiring of the fan to the mobo. In the manual it should show what pins are +12v, ground, and RPM sensor. This should match up to the colors of the wires coming from the fan. Red +12v Black ground and Yellow or some other color RPM sensor.
-
Take the fan off the CPU and test it with a 9 volt battery.
Red wire to +9 volt battery side.
Black wire to -9 volt battery side.
