ffmpegX can do a lot of that. Give that a try.

  3. using ffmpegx i put the avi i wanted in the open dialogue, the filename.mpg in the save dialogue and picked MPEG1(ffmpeg) in the convert to dialogue.
i did not change any other settings and it gave me an error when i tried to encode:
Encoding started on Sat Apr 19 21:25:11 EDT 2003
    /Users/killfire/Movies/CHRIS_ROCK2.avi: Error while opening file
Encoding completed on Sat Apr 19 21:25:11 EDT 2003
    what is the problem?
it runs fine when i look at it in mplayer2?

You may want to try one of the presets, which should have the file type you are looking for.

Usually just opening a file, and then saving a path followed by encode doesnt work, or at least you wont get any pretty results, since you didnt set any default settings.

Also, i wouldnt type in the .mpeg for your saved file, let the program assign the correct extension. Ive had errors when i try to tell it the extension i want it to save to.

Likewise, mpeg1 is for VCD - right?!
have you tried doctoring this .avi and letting quicktime do the TOAST VCD EXPORT?! that may be a little easier.
    just my thoughts

  5. I would be perfectly willing to do that, had i the cash for toast...
which brings up an interesting point: would roxio give out the plugin for free? or is there any company that could offer me a plugin for quicktime(pro) that could allow something simliar to the to toast video cd option.

will try messing with some settings, will post results, hopefully posative.
    thanks,

First doctor the avi with divx doctor II, then open the resulting .mov in ffmpegX, pick the VCD preset and hit encode.
