    Hi,

My question is how do I convert .rm files to avi, mp4, or mov format with a mac?

    Thanks for your time.

They won't do rm or much else in the trialware version.

My only successful way to get Real Media files into something
useful to transcode to DVD has been to "hijack" the stream
using iShowU to record it from Real Player 10, to DV Stream.
Once it was done, I was able to drop that DV Stream to Toast,
    and burn it to DVD.

Now I only had done 30 mins or so, and it was a bit choppy
in places where there was slight re-buffering.

But I got it to DVD.

The same technique can be used to get an .avi or an .mp4,
as Quicktime is the backbone for iShowU.

iShowU is much less expensive than the other screen motion capture choice, Snapz Pro X, which is $70.

If the RM file is a movie ffmpegX will convert to another format. If it's just audio, then Audacity can hijack the sound while playing, as can Wiretap Pro.

Thanks for the tip TerryJ. I will definitely give it a try. For some odd reason, when I try to convert with FFmpeg, it will freeze and not respond every time. Do i need anything special before I can convert .rm to other files using FFmpeg, or is it impossible for FFmpeg to do it?

    Follow Case's suggestion's here first.
I haven't tried this, because it's easier for me to "hijack" the rmvb,
but Case hasn't failed us yet.

The conversion now works like a charm. Thanks for the tip Terryj. Case's way works great, but I couldn't find the right reallib codecs for intel macs until I found this https://forum.videohelp.com/topic322562.html . Once again, FFmpeg has come to my rescue.

    Thanks for everyone's help.

    Cheers

i'm having a problem with converting .rm to anything. whenever i click encode in ffmpegx, it just says done, and nothing happens. I installed all 3 necessary components, and the essential codecs package (then moved and renamed reallib), but it still does not work. anybody know what''s wrong?

you can only use mencoder in ffmpegX for rm conversion. There are a couple of choices from the drop down menu.
