many playback problems

I have a Toshiba SD1200. When I burn VCD's on any other CD-R than sony, they will not play at all. I burn with Easy CD 5 and Nero 5.5 and the 'easy' one plays ok till a part in the middle where the picture falls apart and i get a digital patch work of mush. The same .dat file looks fine on the computer. The 'nero' burn plays a few seconds and then freezes, plays a few seconds and freezes. When I go to play either copy they machine sometimes says disk error and will not play. Any ideas?
