I know that my computer isn't a speedster ! I have a yosemite 300Mhz with 640MB of memory.
Now i'm guessing that something is gone wrong with FORTY-TWO installation 'cause the speed of encoding.
First of all I tried several 42 installations (everytime i deleted the old files) but after a very short encoding time eveytime i got a burnwhatsinhere folder empty both in VCD and SVCD conversion.
After some reading in this forum I discovered that the mpeg2enc was not installed in 42.
To get a 42 running i copied mpeg2enc manually in the correct folder, then i ran 42 speed-up and all now is working.
After i tried some SVCD and VCD (standard settings) conversions but i'm impressed by the low speed of the encoding.
To write down some numers, just for example:
20 minutes of DVD encoded in VCD needed about 20 hours.
13 minutes of DVD encoded in SVCD needed about 40 hours
Sunday 10pm i tried to convert a complete DVD and at this moment the ETA says about 200 hours !!!!
I have no comparison in absolute, but talking with some peecee friends they says that on a slow pentium (500mhz) they take about 8-10 hours to convert a DVD in VCD....
I'm thinking about something wrong in 42 installation 'cause i can understand a time twice a peecee but not 20 times...
I tried a TOP in terminal and i've seen that the machine usage ov mpeg2enc is never more than 30% though i reniced mpeg2enc to -20, mplayer at a -10 and yuv and cat at a -5...
Please, some help to comprehend !!!!
(sorry for my english)

Hello
Here's how i understand it
Your speeds of conversion are going to rely on your processor speed and other things such has your Cache.
My machine is a Dual G4 1.25 Ghz and i can run a complete DVD to VCD in 3 hours, DVD to SVCD in 4 hours and DVD to DVD just slightly longer than the DVD to SVCD.
Now, i have also tried this on a G4 500 (which if you look at just Mhz alone is more than 1/2 mine, its only single processor, and the cache is much less) DVD to VCD takes 12 hours, DVD to SVCD takes 14-15 horus and i have not tried DVD to DVD
so looking at this scale, since your is less than half of the G4 500 I can imagine that your encoding times will be what you are getting.
The Forty Two speed up doesnt always work for the slower macs
A friend has an eMac 700 or 800 mhz and his conversion averages 12 hours!!!!
Im sorry to say this, but your machine mhz speeds are most likely the cause for the long conversion process. -
For comparison, I have a G3-700 ibook w/ 384 MB. A 1-1/2 hour movie typically takes about 12 hours to go to VCD. 2-1/2 hour Harry Potter just finished up after about 19 hours.
I have yet to try a SVCD as I am afraid it would just take too long. -
you cant compare 500 mhz on a PC to 500 mhz on a mac everything is COMPLETELY different. ESPECIALLY comparing a G3 to a G4.. g3 dont encode with ANY software fast.. its about as slow as you can get when it comes to mac.. i REALLY wouldnt be surprised if something actually took 200 hours in SVCD or DVD mode on a 300 mhz g3. The major speed optimization comes with the higher end g4 processors because any optimization that is put into mpeg2enc is ALL altivec which is only G4 oriented.. there is nothing wrong with your install, you just have an old out of date computer, no offense no program that you will ever find will go blazingly fast on a G3.
As below, so above and beyond, I imagine
drawn outside the lines of reason.
Push the envelope. Watch it bend.
Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind. Withering my intuition leaving all these opportunities behind. -
Agreed
each of the speeds i posted above are all on G4, and the fastest is a dual g4.
sorry buddy, perhaps time to decide which new mac for you is right -
Seems that something has changed in converting times with a new installation of 42 !
Maybe the changing of the hard disk name from HD G3 to HD_G3.
Or maybe that I sent a donation to Kai... :P
Now I take about 24 hours to convert a DVD to VCD instead over 100 as I said before.... -
Well im surprised you even got it to pass the first step. Usually spaces or illegal characters will halt it from working.
Keep that in mind with any of these applications, if you have any spaces in the file path you will get errors, removing them and it works
looks like it did in this case
