My TV (Toshiba , 20'' multi-system) comes with both composite and component video ports. Since my TV has component video inputs, is it automatically considered progressive-scan compatible???
I do have a DVD player that supports progressive scan, but I am not sure about the TV. The TV manual does not mention anything about the progressive scan feature, then why in the world do we have component video inputs on the TV if it is useless !!!

Do you mean Composite/component/S-Video?
Composite is a single RCA connector that is yellow. It's better than RF.
S-Video lookes like a mouse connector. It's better than Composite Video.
Component is a number of (BNC/RCA) connectors (Red/Green/Blue and 1 or 2 more). Component can be better than S-video, and 'should' be progressive (within limits). To Be, Or, Not To Be, That, Is The Gazorgan Plan -
I also wondered about these different cables too.
I have the following simple questions.
- So is component video is better than s-video?
- Is composite cable is the one we use that has red, white, yellow?
- How does progressive scan work? Do you need s-video or component video?
- What is optical video cable?
hope you can answer these questions. -
Component is better quality than s-video. No your TV is not progressive scan capable just b/c it has component inputs. You must have a HDTV in order to use progressive scan.

Ok
I have old video tapes (vhs) with home recordings that i need to convert to dvd. Do i need s-video to capture the video? Or would component be ok? Besides i don't think ihave component.
I need to get the best video and audio quality from my tapes. And my capture card has inputs for composite or s-video. -
you don't have to use s-video, but it will look better than composite. If you have component input on you capture card... use that b/c component is better than composite and s-video.

Thanx for the answers.
How do you test the image video quality? I mean how can you compare and see wich one is sharper and more crisp than the other one?
I heard about some test dvds that does you know the rainbow colored strips across your tv. Where can i get it from. I think also some movie dvd alllows you to do the test. -
vhs decks dont come with component outputs - even if they did it would mater much as the signal is not stored as component.
if you had a beta sp deck or something like it -- sure component is the way to go ..
