There is a filter in Virtual Dub called the Null Transform filter. Its sole purpose is to allow you to clip without doing anything else to your video. If you are already using any other filter in Virtual Dub, do not use the Null Transform. Each filter lets you crop in addition to any other properties it has.

yea, i actually ended up going through vdub and trying to figure it out on my own while waiting for a response. i found out how to do it through the filters section, as you posted. everytime i go through though now and actually have it running (after i make the cropping adjustments i need) i get this error message:
Error decompressing video frame 5905:
An unkown error occured (may be corrupt data).
(error code -100)
i tried restarting my computer, but i still keep getting this error message everytime. any suggestions on how to get past this so i can actually get this .avi file to compress properly? -
Clip that puppy out. Load the video, move to frame 5904, press the Home key. move to frame 5906, press the End key. Press the Delete key. Continue with you cropping operation.
Hello. -
thats very good advice actually, but unfortunetly everytime i set it to those #s or even expand them a little bit so that i can avoid that part of the video entirely vdub keeps closing on me. thats so annoying. i'm gonna try to replace the file and hope that it was only that one particular .avi file that had the error in it. cause i'd really like to edit it then convert it to .mpg after and make a vcd off of it. as of now thats not looking too likely though.
