  1. Hi, I know this isn't generally the the right place to ask for advice, but I know you guys (and girls) are pretty smart people over here. Here it goes:
I have a nice fresh installation of XP Pro on my 1.8ghz computer (i have a cheaper EliteGroup mainboard). My computer has been acting funky, like when I click on any button, the computer might stop responding for a while (1min) and then resume. This happens over and over again.

Do you know what could cause this?

    Thanks,
    Bravoxena

I was only trying to ask for help. You were no help. And if you think you're oh so very smart, maybe you should study your English verbs a bit harder... the past tence of shit is shat.

    ive had that problem...

there is a possibility that your WinXP install some files were corrupted.
there is another posibility of a failing CPU fan.
it depends but i formated my disk and now im running fine...
or ur hard drive may be fucked up, not failing...
as a last resort... delete all the partions and format.

or just do a defrag... and dont run ur OS on the capture drive..

  8. IN ALL SERIOUSNESS NOW: I am no computer guru, but I would have to disagree with WeedVendor's assessments. Only because I've seen MANY, and I do mean MANY installs of an OS on MANY different systems, and have yet to see files get corrupt ONCE the OS was installed. You just said you recently installed a "fresh" copy of XP Pro, so that is very doubtful. I have seen on a couple of occasions, the DVD ROM spin so damn fast during install that a coupld of files seem to get skipped and the OS needs to have them directly extracted from the disk manually.

Also, this doesn't sound like a HD issue. It sounds more like a hardware issue, and more specifically, a "memory" issue. What type of memory are you using DIMM? SIMM? Also how many MB's of memory? I've seen the issue you are describing on a few systems, and any OS other then XP when the memory is bad, or at least one stick of memory, the OS will either reboot sporadically, or just lock up and NEVER unfreeze. XP I believe uses individual memory so it seems to circumvent that locking up issue within 15 seconds to 1 minute or so, but if your memory is bad or at least some of it..then XP can't help that. If you have multiple sticks of memory, replace them, or at least put in new memory and take the other ones out and see if the problem persists. If so, then put one of the "old" memory in, one at a time, and see if the problem arises. Then you can trouble shoot. Good Luck "Cher"

  9. You can get bad os installs if you upgraded and not formated the hardrive correctly ....if bravoxena didn't format the hd properly the program files folder still remains leaving a whole multiude of garbage which can cause you grief...My brother who knows shit/shat about pc's did that he tried to play a game that remained then the next time he rebooted the could get back into the windows because the os claimed he had changed his hardware configuration...we could even get back with safe mode I stepped in and reformatted the HD an hey presto fixed now it runs like a gun.....

or it could be something else what do I know :dunce:
How long could we maintain? I wondered. How long until one of us starts raving and jabbering at this boy? What will he think then?

    Bravo,
If your comp is acting slow then it could be that your CPU is working overtime....held hostage to a spyware or a program that is not closing properly. Check this by hitting CTRL+ALT+DEL and check processes and applications. If you do find something utlizing your CPU then use a program like ADWARE to remove this.

    Just a suggestion.

As I said, its just a possibility.

The problem was fixed when i formated maybe it was the corruption or some hardware conflicts.

Yea, I hear you. With all of the responses, it seems like there are many things which can cause it. Hopefully they have tested them and get the problem resolved.

    hi Bravoxena,

I'm sure that "defense" was just messing around w/ ya earlier

However, you might want to try an experiment, if you can that is..

Can you scratch the XP OS and instead, install Windows 98 only, and
then see if everything runs well. If your system runs w/out feavor, then
its a good indication that your last issues were due to faulty XP OS instllation
steps somewhere.. Let me guess, while you were installing XP, somewhere
in the mist, you CRASHED !! If that did in fact happen, you've found your
    issue.. again, a bad installation.

I hope I've ben some help at least. But, I would deffinately give the
above a try.. if not, to releave your curiosity - K ?

Best of luck to ya.. and hope all goes well

  18. The system I saw running on 64 was slow in responding. Similar to the problem that was described. Upgrading to 128 was a huge improvement.

Yeah, my cousin's Pc has 16 mb of Ram.
It took 5 minutes to open a program (Nero) on a 1000 mhz machine.
We found a PC in a dumpster and I just went over there and disected the PC, took the RAM and the CPU and some other goodies (DVD ROM) and we went to his house..
272 Ram Helps alot compared to 16. Instead of taking 20 minutes for XP to load it took 1:30. BIG IMPROVEMENT IN PERFORMANCE...

lmao...I thought I read somewhere that you shelled out 7 grand for a television. Damn, you must love your cousin to shell out 7 g's for a T.V and then hook him up with a computer in the dumpster...lmao....

funny that you mention "cousin" though, because it was just Monday of this week, my cousin asked me to look at his computer and see why it was so slow. One of the reasons was the processor, while the other was only 32 mb of memory.

I know someone who sold me some new Ram for $7, 128 MB, so I hooked that up along with my cousins 32 MB's and the computer to "Them" is like brand new. Everything works and loads much faster. To my cousin, they just went from a Ford to a Ferreri but I won't rain on their parade.
