Is DVD+R OR DVD+RW usually more compatible with most machines? I have an older DVD player and +RW works but NOR +R and my new machine plays both.

In general, DVD+R is more compatible than DVD+RW. In terms of percentage, DVD+R is about 90% compatible whereas DVD+RW is about 60% compatible.

Interesting as my 3 year old Sanyo DWM-360 DVD player plays DVD+RWs but NOT DVD+Rs. Thanks.

Try changing the bitsetting on the DVD+R disc and see if your DVD player can now read the disc.

use the free bitsetter and change your drive to burn as DVD+Rom and see if that works, I have 100% playback on my DVD+R's when I setup my HP 200i to burn this way.

You can use Nero Burning ROM v5.5.10.15 (or newer) to change the book type to DVD-ROM.
