cant encode

Help,
ive d/loaded a movie that will play (eventually) with media player.But virtual dub wont open it.Tempgnc wont open it and g spot also wont open it.
Vitualdub error;
Mpeg import filter;pack synchroniuzation error
Tmpgenc freezes then;
cannot open or unsupported
If i open the move with power dvd and get the file information it says its an mpeg 2.
How do i encode this movie?
I know nero will do it but apperently ill loose the quality.

if it is an mpg2 than it is most likely a svcd so if your player supports svcd than you dont have to convert it .just burn with nero using svcd mode it will not convert it as long as its a compliant file.

If it is an MPG2 file you will need virualdub MOD or virualdub MPG2 to open it. Try avicodec to open it. It is freeware and I belive it is available in the tools section of this webpage. It will give you info on the flick. As far as TMPG goes, try giving the direct show filter in the environmental settings a higher priority.
