I have 2 different kinds of ritek G03 dvd-r inkjet printable media
    both bought at rima.com

    1. Can someone tell me how big difference is with reliability, readability and quality?
    2. Are ones grade A and the other grade B?

and I noticed that around the hole ones are solid you can see through and the other like white from glue or something

only difference is Y and 7 at the end

    B...@....P..Y.. G03
    while others are .B...@....P..7.. G03

which one is better for video

    thank you for help guys

  2. i have the "7" variation and i don't think it is very good.

on average, 1 out of 2 disks fails to burn on an a05. mostly write errors, once nero hung during writing the leadout. however, even when it burns well, my dvd player sometimes won't play the outer edge properly, although the dvd-rom can still read the disk.

i don't have the same problems with other dvd-r or dvd-rw brands.

  3. Sorry but its not the media but the burner with the media, I have used over 300 Ritek's DVD-R with my panasonic DMR-E20 with perfect results and playback in any DVD player, haved burned over 200 DVD+R Riteks also without a hitch in my HP DVD200i without a prob, my friend use a pioneer A04 with Ritek's and I have noting but probs with his burnt DVD-R's, I usually have to reburn them onto a +R to get them to playback correctly in any standalone DVD players, I burn my +R Ritek's at 4.4gigs all the time and never have a playback prob, the DMR-E20 records them right out to the edge and never seems to effect the playback.
Now my brother has noticed on his Sony 500UL burner that if he tries to burn a ritek using NERO he can't get most even burned or the ones that do burn has playback problems, but since switching over to recordnow DX to burn, every Ritek he has burned has worked and played back fine even in his XBOX in widescreen mode. Its all in finding the right combination that works for you.

  4. I haven't actually used PY, but judging from my experiences with P7 and the reports I've heard about Ritek discs, I'd say P7 is B Grade. Supposedly Riteks G03are among some of the most reliable media you can buy, but I ordered a 50 pack of Ritek G03(P7) from allmediaoutlet and only 3/10 discs would burn correctly all the way until the end. The rest would skip and such. I was wondering if it was my burner, but it would burn maxell dvd-rw and memorex dvd-r correctly. I'm pretty sure its the media. Either Ritek is trying to save some money or merchants are importing B quality media and selling as A quality.

  5. (posted this in another thread)

I'm having similar issues with my A04, fw 1.40. I burned through 50 straight G03 P..7's, and had 0 coasters. I got in a spindle of P..Y's and am having probs with every single one (9 so far). BTW, the 7/Y falls in the byte pattern that defines the Write Strategy for the disc, so that indicates they are of a different dye composition at the very least. So either they are of lower grade, or the Pioneer firmware can't handle this write strategy very well. (It's bytes 11-14 of the 0Eh page if anyone cares).

I don't know what to do about it, unless someone knows a fw rev that works with them. My buddies with A05 and DRU500 have no issues with them.

    -------------------------

So I'm in total agreement, it has to be bugs in the Pioneer f/w. I just doubt we'll ever get them to do anything about it... I can't truly say if the different (let's call it "Y") dye is lower qual, but it's definitely more problematic for Pioneer users.

  6. anyone else noticing differences between the 2? I just called RIMA and they told me they pull one disc at random and it was a G03 P7. Getting ready to order but would like some more info first...

  7. I have not had very good luck with some Ritek's but have had VERY good luck with Princo 2x DVD-R's here. They have been much better for me burning with my Pioneer DVR-105 then the Ritek's. Some of the early Princo disks were not very good, but I have had good results burning 2x Princo's here!

Nothing mentioned on DOA media at all. But you CAN return it as working at 15% loss.. better then burning a bunch of coasters..

Sucks that Ritek finally decided to ship a bunch of crap out when they knew everyone was using there stuff.. Personally I see people with 5 100 count cake boxes and that is enough to never buy Ritek again.

I have used both P7 and PY disk, I started paying attention when it was first pointed out there were 2 types... I have had no problems burning P7s at 2x, and I don't THINK I've had any problems with PYs either, but until I get a known load of PYs in I can't say 100% for sure. I know for a fact PYs are fine at 1x cause a friend just tore though a 100 real quick like with them.

  12. I actually wrote the Ritek Corporation about these differnet type of G03 media to find out what the differences are. I have actually seen 4 different types posted in the forums. They are as follows:

    So you have B@PY, J@PY, B@P7 and J@P7 .

They responed to me asking if I could send them a picture of each type along with what the S/N is (located on the middle of the disk in the format of XX-XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX ) Since I only have one type of the above, I was wondering if anyone out there that has one or more of the above types could email me or post a picture of the disk and what the S/N is on the middle ring. Then I can repond to Ritek and see what they say.

There is a program called DVDInfo that you can download from this site to read that information.

No the "7/y" byte is the "OPC (Optimum Power Calibration) suggested code".

I just checked my Ritek media and they are B...@....P..7.. G03 in DVDInfo. Went back and checked the old stuff and they are B...@....P..y.. G03. I'm on my 4th 50 pack spindle so I've burned about 160 of these disks so far on Pioneer DVD-R A04 (Retail box drive not OEM). Some burns are data, other burns are video. There's probably an even mix of BP7 and BPY that I have burned so far.

100% perfection. I've never had a read error on the data and I've never had skipping video or stopping video on movies. Playback has been good in the dvd-r unit plus perfect in my stand-alone and a lot of other stand-alones I've tried. Like thxkid said already (I agree): "Sorry but its not the media but the burner with the media". I agree with him because the problem could be the way the media was encoded, the software used to burn the media, or anything else. Nothing says that the media itself is to blame, even if other media works fine that's not enough testing to be certain.

thxkid said this too: "when he tries to burn a ritek using NERO he can't get most even burned or the ones that do burn has playback problems, but since switching over to recordnow DX to burn, every Ritek he has burned has worked and played back fine even in his XBOX in widescreen mode". I find this important because I use Recordnow DX to burn ALL of my movies and data (it came bundled with the drive).. And so far not a single error. I never tried Nero but I wouldn't doubt the software has something to do with the problems. But this is speculation of course, not having nero and not being able to test it means there's no way to be certain for myself.

To the original poster: "which one is better for video" - They are both exactly the same. I can tell no difference between older movies on the 'y' media and newer movies on the '7' media.
