  1. Hello again ,
I've got a 576x240 Widescreen AVI file and I hope to put it in (S)VCD format.
The file size is 713MB and it plays 1hr 45 min (23.976fps). I figured that I would not be able to fit it on 1 VCD anyway. When I tried to use the TMPGENC NTSC Film VCD built-in template, it finally said that the MPEG file would take 400% of a standard 80min CD, this means that I'd have to use 4 CDs for a 1hr 45 min movie??? The option to change bitrate is greyed out and not available. Do I have to use another template? I still hope that I could use 2 CDs and even get it somehow in SVCD...Is there any smart calculator to help out with all estimates?
Another question is if it's possible to reformat the movie from wide screen to normal full screen without losing much quality?

    Thanks!
    Kuzz

    713 MB can fit on a CD-R.

  4. thanks, but that is my AVI size (713MB) and I need to convert it to MPEG before I burn to VCD. The problem is that when I try to convert with the TMPGENC VCD template, like a I said it estimates 4 CDs (352x240, 23.976mps,314 minutes) from the source 576x240 (1:45min). How can I fit it on one VCD?

There mus be some VBR component in the AVI somewhere that confuses TMPGEnc. It will fit nicely on 2 CDs. Try to encode it, and see what happens!

  6. The problem which you are having is caused by the audio. Extract the audio to an uncompressed wav file in audio dub.

Choose the avi file as the video source and the wav file that you have just created as the audio. I am estimating that the final file will be around the 950mb area. So you can split this into two and then burn using nero.

If you need help doing this give me a shout. I always used to get stumped on this.

  7. I launched conversion 'as is' to MPEG VCD template as I went to work this morning, let's see what happens in a couple of hours when I'm back home.
When I opened this file to check its specs, Virtuadub wasn't happy with the audio piece and somehow converted it. This is a musical movie and the last thing I want is to lose sound quality. If I need to extract audio to wav, how can I make sure that I keep maximum quality?

an hour and 45 minutes is only 105 minutes. not 314. 105 minutes should fit on two cds.

The VDub error report and TMPGEncs wrong file size estimate is caused by the same thing: VBR audio stream.
    In VDub, do this.
Choose Direct stream copy under Audio.
    Under File: Save WAV
This will give you a file ????.wav, that's not (likely) a wav file, but the audio in the format it was when interleaved with the video stream. This may be AC3 or MP3 - VDub may tell you what under File info.
Rename this ???.wav to ???.mp3 (or ac3 or...) and decode it to a real wav with your favourite mp3/ac3towav decoder.

From now on, use this wav as audio source.

  11. thanks Mats, I was able to create an MPEG in SVCD format and it plays OK after I processed sound seperately.... now how can I split it in two pieces? I could not open it in Virtual Dub-it says import filter Sync error...I also tried to cut it with MPEG tools in TMPGENC bit it looks like it starts to re-encode from scratch second by second...Is it not possible just to cut the file in 2 pieces?

No, you're quite right - use mpeg tools in TMPGEnc to cut a mpeg file created by TMPGEnc in two. It doesn't reencode - it just demuxes, cuts and remuxes.
Beware of sync probs, specially in the second part tho...
I try to frame serve in two passes from VDub to TMPGEnc, to avoid cutting the mpeg.

By buying the movie instead of downloading it? and converting to SVCD is overkill. your resolution is much more suited to VCD (352X240) and you could crop to a full screen movie like that too. but thee you are....
