  1. Hi, I've been trying to convert an XVID file into Mpeg-2 or whatever and put it on a DVD to be played in a regular DVD player. I use Virtual Dub to extract the audio into a .wav file and then TMPGEnc to convert the XVID file into Mpeg-2. After this, I use Ulead DVD MovieFactory 2 to either author the mpeg-2 file into a folder to burn later, or burn to a disk at the current time. Either way I do it, I burn the DVD, put it into the DVD player and the video shows up, but there is no sound. I also don't understand where I should put the audio .wav file from Virtual Dub on the disk. I know there has to be a VIDEO_TS file and an AUDIO_TS file but I've seen too many forms of this and its confusing me. I've seen them as two separate folders on the disk and I've seen them where the AUDIO_TS folder is actually in the VIDEO_TS folder. When I look in the AUDIO_TS folders, there is nothing there. If someone could please give me a little advice on what I'm doing wrong I'd really appreciate it. Thx

  2. Whoa, did you encode the wav file in TMPGenc and/or ulead. That is did you ever mux the video with the audio? What happens when you play the MPEG file on your PC before burning (is there sound then?). What if you play the authored VIDEO_TS files on your PC? Does the DVDR play on your pc?

If there is sound in the MPEG but not on your burnt DVD I would suspect that's because you used TMPGenc to encode the audio to MP2 (which works on most standalones but is not part of the DVD standard). If so demux the MPEG and convert the MP2 file to ac3.

If there is no sound in the MPEG file, you never encoded the audio. Again, encode the wav file to ac3 and use Ulead to author.

See the 'what is' section to the left for more info on the DVD standard. Basically the VIDEO_TS folder contains all the files need for video DVD discs. The AUDIO_TS folder is for audio DVDs (no one uses these and the folder should be empty, and fact you don't even need it).

  3. Sounds like you forgot to select Wave Audio in VirtualDub and pointed it to the WAV file you extracted, so you ended up encoding just the video without the audio.

  4. um.....srry i never read anything about muxing in the dvd conversion guide with TMPGEnc. I think they should make it a little more clear that there is more of an audio step to this. So what program do I use for muxing and how do I do it? Or if you don't have time to explain, could you link me to instructions for a good program? In case you need a little more depth on where I am right now i've created an Mpeg file with TMPGEnc and an audio file was also created. The audio file is about 957 mb. and it says it is a WAV audio. So where to now? Srry for being so slow at this I really do appreciate all the help, thx alot!

  5. Ok so the video file made with TMPGenc when played on your PC has no audio (correct?). So I'll assume it's a m2v file.

As for the wav file you want to convert that to ac3 (I recommend HeadAC3he):

    http://www.doom9.org/audio-guides.htm

Once you have the m2v and ac3 file, you can author the DVD (see the Author links to the left). This will create a VIDEO_TS folder with all the files (IFO/VOB) for your DVD video. You then burn the VIDEO_TS folder (I don't use Ulead but IIRC you can burn from within it) to a DVDR.

As an aside it's a good idea to have 1 DVD-RW disc to play around with, esp if you're just starting out with all this. Also it's a good idea to use a software DVD player ot test out the VIDEO_TS folder to make sure everything works (menu links, chapters, audio tracks, subs, etc) prior to burning. Good luck...
