    I am finally getting a new pc.
    My current pc is slow p3 450Mhz. I used to convert all dvd movies to divx using flaskmpeg which used to process 2.5fps. Now with newer Pc's I cant really estimate the fps or the time required to do this. Of course now i amgonna convert movies to vcd but was wondering how fast the processesing is done on the 2.5, 2.6 .... 3.06. Some of you will say just use your 2.5 and times it by the no of times the new cpu's are faster than your chip, but i wish it was easy as that. You guys know that inthe days of p3 we had(well i had and have)100Mhz bus speed and now its a different story. This is what i am thinking of buying

    Intel P4 2.5Ghz
    Gigabyte Ga8inxp
    Corsair 512DDR Ram 333Mhz
    Sony Dvd+-Rw Drive
    Canopus ADVC 1394
    SB Audigy Live 2

    Now after capturing in dv from the firewire of canopus card i was wondering how long it will take with a system like this to encode to say 2hr movie to vcd or dvd?

    The reason i ask is i cant make a decision on getting the 3Ghz chip if it has a major speed increase over the 2.5 or should i buy the canopus Dvstorm2 which you know is fast at encoding to different formats not sure if this thing does capturing from analog and dv also not sure if it converts lets say to divx using its processing power. Well the quetion here comes down to the caaash. Should i getthe 3Ghz rather than the dvstorm coz here in Aus dvstorm is 2times the cost 3ghz chip. Or should i give both these a miss and go wiht the 2.5Ghz cpu


    Also can someone post the time it takes from 2.5 cpu upwards to encode a dv file lets say an hour to convert to dvd and vcd quality mpeg? Preferably dvd to vcd conversion using "Easy vcd" software which does everything from ripping the movie to getting the final mpeg.

  2. Well if you check out my hardware spec's a typical one and a half to two hour film takes around two hours.

    As you can see my pc is very similar to the one that you are thinking of buying.

    The ratio of CPU speeds is a rough estimate of decrease in encoding time. You should be roughly 5x faster at 2.5 Ghz over 450 Mhz.

    I wouldn't spend the extra hundreds of $$$ for the fastest CPU, I would spend the extra $$$ on 'good' DVDROM and DVDR drives, and big fast Harddrives. Don't forget a decent video card.....

  4. I agree with Gaz, that extra mhz will make a small difference but not the same as the money on extra preph's
