  3. Hi, I found this in Google.

Is to uninstall Windows Messenger from XP, I haven't tested in other OS, like 2000 or 98.

To remove messenger follow the instructions below....

    1.. Navigate to C:\windows\inf\

    2.. Open sysoc.inf

3.. find msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7 in the file and take
out the word hide so the line would look like
    msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,,7

4.. Close the file and save it

5.. Now go to the Add and remove programs applet in the control panel and
you will be able to uninstall windows messenger.

6.. Make sure to click on the add remove windows components button.

Messenger SUCKS and sucks up your machine like a giant Microsoft intrusive leech (unless your a thirteen year old girl and need to get dumb messages from friend every 2 seconds) with crap popping up everywhere to annoy the hell out of you. One of the first things I do on a new or Re-install is remove Messenger complete here is a link for a VB script that will remove there is also one to disable but I just kill the whole damn thing. Oh yea did I mention I think messenger SUCKS!!

  13. A good site for ridding these types of annoyances is www.annoyances.org More specific (but not exact) to your problem, is disabling "services" in WinXP/2000 http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article03-300

  14. The easiest I found was just renaming the /Program Files/Messenger/ folder to /MessengerOFF/. You have to close it down first, then rename the folder. Now it doesn't start! If you need it, just rename it back!

  15. I was able to disable Messenger by unchecking the box in msconfig.

For bad sound when captured with ATI cards. Try to lower the input volume to 60% or less on your sound card control slider.

    Good luck.

  18. There was a article in PC Mag this month on this. I was having trouble with messages popping up also and so far this seems to work. In XP go to control panel - administrative tools\services - double click Messenger - click stop - set start up type to manual or disable - click OK[/list]

  19. as another poster said, PC MAGAZINE, I believe "two months" ago had a resolution for this. Without going through all those steps though, you can just go to "msconfig" and prevent it from starting up, then you should be ok for a while. Just uncheck the box next to "msmsng." Should it start loading up again, simply repeat the step. However, some of the other steps givin' should allow you to get rid of it for good.

I know this is for the Windows Messenger removal, the instructions from Microsoft above rang me a bell on another problem. The CD player wouldn't load and play inserting a music CD. Not exactly the same, however with the same file, Sysoc.inf on a different line.

The problem was due to the "Yahoo Player" uninstalled damaging the path for the CD player to work. This fault only applies to Win2000.

    Check out on: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;259473

I followed the instructions to solve the problem and this worked, however still no sound from the CD player after successfully loaded to play.

The sound problem wasn’t ever resolved on that computer and the CD player is now removed using Windows 2000 Add/Remove Program. Anyway, WMP9 is the default player for music CD’s.

    One thing
I jsut installed Norton Anti-Virus 2003 - it detects and installs virus scanning for MSN
it also "locks" MSN open at all times - maybe this is why you can't un-install it easily
You can turn off MSN scanning in NAV control panel
