Can anyone tell me in short 3 answers how to get rid of those things![]()
Simple deleting doesn't work on most of the files since they are protected system files.

You could use a live disc of linux and not use windows at all if they bug you that much.

You can't completely remove them, they are not a security threat unless you use them.

That doesn't work but you can make another program the default by selecting Open With->choose the program you want.Originally Posted by lacywest

You can get rid of messenger with a free program called Messenger Disable available from here http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_mess_disable.htm

Here are the files left after removing it from this location. Those files will be visible to the hackers...Originally Posted by buttzilla

You're being a little too paranoid. Just hide the folders and don't use the programs. There's no way to really get rid of those programs. You could just also delete those files but I'm not guaranteeing that you won't mess up your system by doing so.

delete the NON-SHARED files contained in their respective subdirs (within
"C:\PROGRA~1\ "). I advise not to remove the directories, just empty them.
Warning: this will not work at all if your Winchester is NTFS --- DOS 7.xx cannot
read NTFS volumes >_< Perhaps you will also need to use the so-called
safe-mode and edit the registry in order to erase possible system calls to
some of the deceased files.
Hope this works for you (if you were using Windows 95, it surely would).

Yes, but they can be deleted without harming windows. These are setup files that can be used to reinstall media player. I have deleted mine with no problem. And I also deleted the media player program folder from the program file folder. If you need to reinstall media player through the add/remove function that you used to removed them with it will ask for your windows cd to replace the files. TheOriginally Posted by fLYtRap

That's it. Whenever you delete them, the f***ing stupid operating system extracts the back-up copies from certain .cab archives contained in C:\Windows\system32\ andI can't delete them...as soon as I do they coming back like roaches...

restores the cr*pware. Quite annoying indeed.
Since your hard disk DOES contain tons of garbage (sorry for my frankness...),BTW
I have NTFS
I believe it is already time to re-format it in FAT32 and have an experiment with a
cleaner installation.

I GOT RID OF IT AND THIS IS HOW:
1- get KILLBOX, its beautiful
I don't remember where I got it from, you can search or get from my desktop, I am online non-stop pretty much
2- open it (doesn't require installation) and browse for 1 file
3- if it is a *.dll file than put a check mark in the box "unregister before deleting" and put another check in box "delete on reboot"
Works like a dream, although takes a little bit, because you have to do it 1 file at the time.

Windows / MSN Messenger is not the same as the Windows Messenger Service. Windows Messenger Service can be used to send pop up messages from one computer to another or from the OS or another application to alert you.Originally Posted by fLYtRapNothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore.

You don't need that to disable it, frankly I'm suprised its on and you don't get pop-ups. You can disable it in the services panel.

I actually did had pop-ups that I was blocking with pop-up stopper...but they should be blocked by a firewall...this is how I found out that Jetico is good to wipe your ass withOriginally Posted by thecoalman

That's nice now open a page that has video or audio embedded in it using WMP... You probably can't see any audio or video that has been embedded for that matter.Originally Posted by fLYtRap

Just my .02 but I think you're going a little overboard. Any exploit in WMP you've read about will have either been fixed or is not really an exploit. The best protection in the world is the person sitting in front of the keyboard. If you keep your software like your browser, virus and firewall up to date, stay away from sites where you shouldn't be and don't open anything you shouldn't then the chances of getting infected by something are nil. it's people surfing the Internet with bad habits or outdated software that get hit. Only exception to that is you are one of the unfortunate people that get infected with something that is new and most likely even after all you have gone through you'll still be vulnerable because these are usually Browser or OS exploits.
-
You probably right about that. I just want to get rid of everything that is popping-up and WMP is one of those really annoying.
Just compare this piece of crap to VLC. It takes forever to update to newest version and it doesn't even play videos or movies without codecs. VLC takes 2 minutes to install and you can do anything with it.moved to another forum, nobody likes me here...
