  4. Unless you're going to wait for the Sony unit to drop in price, then you'll need to pick DVD-R or DVD+R..

I have a DVD+R and love it - but also have a couple friends who swear by their DVD-R units... Make a choice and don't sweat it...

Sorry, but most DVD Writers are around the $250-$300 range unless they're used.

  8. You will be surprised to find out that many people bought their DVD-R or DVD+R at around $150 to $200. Just check DVD Writers on the left side column.
You just have to be alert and check prices every few days at stores like Staples, OfficeMax, and Office Depot.
Of course, I don't think you will find SONY DVD-everything under $300 but why would you need it when you are going to only copy DVDs or make your home movies into DVD?
I bought my Cendyne (same as Pioneer 105 drive) for $150 after a rebate and a coupon at Staples. I found out that someone else bought it for $130. I also saw OfficeMax offer HP DVD-RW for $200 without coupons (of course cheaper if you had one).
I am not sure when they will have a similar deal but it will definitely happen soon.

  9. I think you forgot about tax. Rebates are nice, but you still have to pay the tax on the original price.

  11. DVD-RAM is a dead format

Dead for what. It kicks all other rewritables butt for data, but regardless if you look youll see it writes -R also, and he wanted -R for $150.00 so this fills those requirements. As for Ram being dead all rewritable can go as far as I'm concerned. I've never even used a rewritable cd and I've been burning stuff since before rw was around and it cost 500bucks for cdr at 2x no rewrite. But wheather its used or not for data -Ram has the best features outside of compatability with other drives and if you ain't worried 'bout that like me if I need compatability such as vid I use -R why would I need my harddrive backup compatable with other drives.

But before a war ensues I am unchecking "Notify me when a reply is posted" and I ain't arguing about something thats a matter of opinion anyway. When its opinion like this no one ever wins cause neither side ever will change their mind. So for now I bid you a'dure.

  12. I got the Cendyne 4x DVR-A05 drive (OEM of Pionner DVR-105) from office max. The list price was $270 but there was a -$50 instant rebate at the register. And then a mail in -$50 rebate as well (took about 3mo to arrive thou). So the drive actually cost me $170 + tax.

A LOT of people have gotten this drive this way
