........is the Verbatim DVD-Rs sold out at all the Best Buy Stores while there is more than enough Verbatim DVD+Rs in the southern area of the USA due to the recent Verbatim Sale? One could argue that the DVD+R crowd can simply go to SAMS and get a 12 PK for only $23.99 or a 30PK for $49.99. Who knows, but $19.99 for a 15 PK of Verbatim is dirt cheap regardless of the DVD format. I am glad that I bought 2 sets on Saturday before they sold out. I was going to get some more b/c even $32.99 is cheap for a 15 PK of DVD-Rs.

I wonder if the majority of the buyers were computer DVD-R drive users or Panasonic Recorder owners?

I can't get my hands on the Verbatim DVD-R at Best Buy here in south/east Michigan. The sale started Sunday. I was at the store 1:30 that day and all the DVD-R was already gone but there was DVD+R left. I called 5 other Best Buys in my area that day and no one had DVD-R left. I also checked out my closest Best Buy today because they had a delivery Wednesday night. Still no DVD-R but DVD+R was left.

That's why I bought a dual writer, to avoid such problems and because it still isn't absolutely clear which format becomes the standard.

Dual writers are the future (in the red laser world).

Just curious. What diffference does it make which format becomes the standard if the DVD plays in a stand alone player? I think people are making too big a deal of this. Most electronic equipment becomes obsolete in just a few years anyway. So why does everybody make such an issue out of +R/-R?

  5. right, the war between the two standards does'nt matter to me, if it works on my set top dvd player and my computer dvd player, for now i think that it's better to have a dvd-r with cheap blank dvd, the standardization will happen in one or two year and up to then i will have shown a profit with my burner.

keep in mind that prices a going down and down and in one or two years the prices of dvd burners will be the same as the cdburner today and you will be able to change your burner more easily than today

  6. Seriously, this all sounds expensive. I am just glad I have a PC Club near by where I can pick up a 50pack of oem sony, ritek, lead data for $39.99. Out of 150 disc so far only 1 burned bad, maybe next time I won't load up another burning software while I am burning a dvd. Go to www.pclclub.com and order some disc. I even bought some 4x ritek from the Delmar computer show last week, 25 for $39.99 and some DVD covers 5 for a $1.

  9. He meant to type http://www.pcclub.com. I also have bought 2 - 50 packs for $39.99 ea from them and one 50 pack was 80% OEM Sony 2X and the other was all ACCU 1X(...LD...media code). I have only had one coaster and it was on one of the Sony 2X discs. All of theothers have burned and played flawlessly.

  10. I just bought a DVD+R burner, and now I wish I'd bought a -R burner. Not only is the media much more expensive, it's harder to find, and one of my two DVD players can't read +R media. This despite the reputation of +R having been designed for maximum compatibility...why then do players handle -R more commonly? Sheesh.

It's not all my fault though: retail stores around here rarely carry -R burners...for some reason they prefer to sell the +R models. Perhaps it's because they can charge more for the media?

Still, it's great to have a 4x burner that costs only $200. Too bad 4x media costs more than it's worth right now...

A couple of weeks ago Officemax had the Cendyne/Pioneer burner for $169 after $50 in store and $50 mail in. I had already bought it with only the $50 mail in rebate (around $219).

The first media I bought Kyphermedia something 10 DVD-R for $15 was junk. I think I have 1 good movie, with about 2 left (unused), the rest coasters. They didn't even verify after burning. At first I wasn't verifying so I didn't realize they were junk until playback.

The COMPusa media I bought last week with cases $9.99 for 10 pack (picked up two packs), I have only burnt 1 and it verified and plays fine.

Has anybody seen 2x DVD-RW at any good price? I only have the one that came with burner and I like to use it for tests or stuff that I know I don't want permantly. At the stores (QTY. 1) DVD-RW run about $7 (for 1x speed).

DVD-R burners (especially Pioneers) will continue to drop in price the more that are sold. I don't understand why Best Buy and Circuit City don't carry them.

  12. More people have - recorders so -media will always out sell the + media , its common sense.

  13. I think pioneer makes a quality burner. Not to mention DVD-R is the standard backed by the DVD forum. DVD+R is like the non-standard XVCD format of the DVD world. It *works* depending on who you talk with, but in general its shakey.

  14. Sorry the correct link is www.pcclub.com

The link directly to the disc is here

Looks like they are back to $49.99 on the web page. I was in the San Diego store 2 days ago and they were still $39.99

I have purchased 4 packs so far. They all have burned at 2x on my sony dru500a.

    2 - Ritek 2x g3
    1 - Sony 2x oem media 2x
    1 - Lead Data oem 2x

  15. The good news is if I can find a DVD-R burner for $150 or less, I can get it and I will have spent about the same amount as if I'd bought one of those
Sony -R+R burners...plus, I can burn at twice the rate...in both formats at the same time (on separate computers).

  16. Odd. I had the exact opposite experience at my Best Buy this week during the sale.
Since the +R Verbatims were $15 after rebate, while the -R Verbatims were $20 after rebate, it made perfect sense that the +R's would be in higher demand. Indeed, I had to go back 3 days in a row -- at the 10a open on the 3rd day -- in order to get my hands on the one and only +R 15-pack in the store. The -R's were readily available.
It seems the individual Best Buys have grave stocking inefficiencies that don't meet local demand.

u know what, I have made a big issue of dvdr formats in the past and after reading your response Gabriel, thats the best thing I've heard about the dvd-r vs dvd+r issue!

  18. I used to think that DVD+R was winning the format war, because that is nearly all you see in stores in my area. It was usually 10 to 1 +r over -r. Actually, I found out recently that this is because the -r discs and burners are selling so fast that they have problems keeping them in stock.

Looks like -r won, at least, right now, in my area.
