Anyone that has seen (err...I mean read the english subtitled version) Of Ruroyni Kenshin wouldn't even recognize the current version on the cartoon channel. Exact same animation, totally different meaning. DBZ is the same.

Butchered, completely butchered. Not worth watching/capping unless it has the original subs.

Unfortunately, this is true of nearly any dubbed Anime that hits the US. And you can't have subs on american TV, as Americans are too lazy to read. Sigh, so many good Anime's butchered be be politically correct by a marketing department gone mad for syndication.

Kinda like the Power rangers, same bad rubber suits, but every country had their own rangers.....lottsa $$$ in that franchise, Too bad it was a Voltron ripoff :P

I do not think that it's an offical policy but it's VERY unlikely to happen. Most people in the US do not like subtitles and prefer dubs. I'm sort of into anime. Before DVDs became popular/standard companies had to release two verisons of most imports, one dubbed and one subbed.

The dubs outsold subs but about 9:1. In fact some companies didn't even produce subtitled anime (eg. Streamline) as they thought there was no profit in it.

Heh, when I watch raw anime, no subs or dubs, most of the time you can get the gist of what's going on and put in your own dialogue in your head. Sometimes it's better than what comes out in subs or dubs. :P

Streamline? If memory serves correctly, that was a venture owned by Robotech creator CARL MACEK, and was sold out long ago. Many properties went to HARMONY GOLD, owner of Robotech and the current home of Carl. Auctioned off I believe. But again, going off memories from several years ago.

I speak Spanish too so I can talk to all the lazy immigrants that don't want to learn the language of my country. FYI: Lazy vs Not-Yet-Learned are different too. I sympathize with people that just came here, not the guys that have been here for 10 years. It only took me 6 to get fluent in their language. What's the holdup on their end? We get a lot of them down in Texas. Ingrates if you ask me. If they don't want to learn my langauge, then I don't care if they don't watch tv. Anyway, they have a few networks.

You can find French, Spanish, and others around the country, but they are small and have no rules against subs. I've seen several movies on Univision. Watched Superman in English with Spanish subs a while back on Univision.

I agree with you bud,living here in CA we voted English as our official language in 1986 but still the voter registration form and drivers license test come in 80 different languages and dialects.

If you can't speak English in the USA, then you are destined to live in a ghetto (look up the word, this is the correct definition). If you only speak spanish, you are destined to live in NYC, Chicago, Florida, Texas, New Mexico or California. You are also destined to make less than minimum wage.
Ignorance of the law is no excuse, and being unable to read is also no excuse. The peoples republic of Californai Miranda Rules aside, unless your with a tour group :P

This seems to gotten way off topic but since everyone is talking about it. I think the main problem with people learning English (in the USA), well at least for the Spanish speaking children who attend bilingual schools, is the schools themselves. One would think by the name bilingual that the school would teach english to spanish speakers and maybe even vise versa! But sadly that is not the case. While the children both attend the same school, the english speakers study in english, and the spanish speakers learn in spanish. What a jip if you ask me. And they have the nerve to call it bilingual. I guess they mean that there is at least one teacher there who can speak two languages. This is a real and definite problem I see in the USA. All the immigrants that I know have a willingness to learn the language. The opportunity is just being denied (for the children anyway). So while I agree that when in Rome do as the Romans (or speak as the Romans in this case) It appears to me that spanish speakers are being denied the opportunity to learn the language. I know there are some who refuse to learn the language, or want to learn but too lazy or too busy, but I feel this is a minority, at least in Arizona. Well there's my 3¢.

As for dubs, it has been my experience that most foreign (i.e., original language other than English) films/shows are far superior in the original language + subtitles.

This is usually because the English dubbing is usually a poor effort (e.g., the English version of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is CRAP compared to the Chinese version).

There are a few exceptions where the dubbing is exceptional (or the original language was crap) ... e.g., DBZ (though some would disagree).

I disagree, dragonball z was an exceptional english du for the first 2 seasons. the original american voice actors were better than the current.

DBZ is one of those few examples where the English dubs are excellent (and IMHO) better than the original (Japanese).

Seeing as anime is viewed as regular TV in japan it's subject to the same rules...

Some is excellent...
Some is garbage (but.. train wreck style)
Most is fairly indifferent and so-so, to my eyes anyway.

You could invoke the "90% of everything is crap" rule, if you were to be harsh..

Same way here. I think that japanese animation stuff it the stupidest crap in the world...but that's my opinion.

I've been watchign anime since the early 80's. The dubed versions regardless do not hold a candle to the original japanese dialog with subtitles. This includes the hacked up, porly voices acted english dubbed Dragonball and DragonballZ episodes. I've all the Dragonball episodes and movies and Funimation has done a diservice to the whole series with their shoddy translation.

American companies who do the translations often cast the wrong people for the parts(sound wise) or the people they pick are their just for the money and don't care about getting the voice right. If I can I try and buy all my anime directly from Japan. A lot of the Laserdiscs and DVDs are subbed in english.
