  1. I have several .mpeg, and a couple .avi and .rm files, I would like to burn into DVD, so I can view on my DVD player at home. VCD works, but I want DVD, so I can fit more on one disc. Can anyone tell me which software to use? I tried TMPGEnc. It took over my computer for 5 hours, for a 45 min mpeg, and didn't work. Help!!! Please!!!
I have a 950MHz AMD Athlon, 60gig WD HDD, my O.S. is Windows ME, I burn using Nero, and I have a Sony DRU-500A. I've used DVDXCOPY and it works great for DVD coping.

  2. Well, you may need to give some more info. Did you convert the avi's to a dvd compliant mpeg2 in TmpegEnc? What program did you use to author the dvd with on the ones you say didn't work? Unlike a VCD, a dvd must be authored by creating a VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS file to burn on Nero. What format in Nero did you use, I would suggest DVD-ROM UDF/ISO making sure you're using UDF 1.02 instead of 1.05.

You see it could many things that created the bad disc that didn't work, i.e. your set top player won't play a certain type of media like +/- R discs. It would help to list what you did so that we can see the possible problem areas.

As to the encoding time, 5 hrs seems like a long time but it could be other issues rather than TmpegEnc, one concern I have is your OS, ME is a notoriously buggy operating system but other things could contribute to the time issue, just need to post more info. Also, you may want to consult the guides on this site.

  3. I think you need to do a bit (or a lot) of reading and learn waht it is you are really trying to do. This stuff is often not straightforward or quick. If it was forums like this would not be so busy.

Take a look at the left of the page. Start by reading the WHATIS DVDR and then move on to the converting and authoring guides. Try a few different things, much of the software used is frewware, shareware or available as trial versions. When you get unstuck come back and ask specific questions. Tell us what you have done so far, what has gone wrong and what source material you started with and someone may be able to help.

  4. I downloaded ULead software. I tried to burn one of my .avi files to DVD format. It worked!! However it wouldn't work in all the DVD players I tried it in. My PS2 and my Aunts panasonic DVD+VCR combo unit didn't work. In fact my Aunt's said "NOT IN NTSC FORMAT", which it wasn't. I did PAL thinking it was the way to go. My mom's Zenith DVD played it just fine. So now I'm trying it in NSTC format, to see what happens. It still takes a while to convert it for burning. But as along as it works. As far as what kind of blank DVD-R I'm using. I don't know. I bought it from blankmedia.com . Their only about $1 a piece. If you really want to know what they are, all looked it up. I'll let you guys know what happens either way.

  5. I just used ULead to burn my Birds fo Prey mpeg collection to DVD. It worked fine. I did it to NTSC format and it worked in my PS2. Knowing how picky the PS2 is. I'm assuming if my DVD work in the PS2, it would work on most any dvd player. So in short, I highly recommend the ULead to author your know DVD's. And use the NTSC setting, but don't expect to use your computer for a good while. Plus have at least 15 gig of empty space on your Hardrive. I used the cheapest DVD-r I could find. There is one problem though. I tried to burn an avi file using the NTSC mode. After awhile, the sounds of the picture don't match whats' going on. The sound plays ahead of the film. Any Idea's?
