A few weeks ago, I more or less discovered by accident that the problem Ulead DVD Movie Factory and others have with unusably slow frame-to-frame navigation on 60+ minute VBR-encoded MPEG files is caused by the presence of open GOPs, not by VBR itself. A little more experimentation confirmed that ATI MMC 7.7 captures VBR MPEG-2 using open GOPs.

Can 8.1 be configured/tweaked/hacked to use only closed GOPs when doing VBR MPEG-2 captures?

Along a similar line, can 8.1 do CQ VBR (i.e., "use as many bits as you need, subject to some maximum, to make this current frame meet a certain quality standard, regardless of how many bits you've used already or think you'll use later")?

  2. Yes, and almost yes:

MMC 8.1 has an option to capture with Closed GOP. Obviously, it's mostly only useful if you're going to edit the file later on.

You can get close to CQ mode by setting the max bitrate to a very high value (ie, 15Mbps).
