  1. I'm posting this for a friend who for whatever reason was not able to post here.

I have been burning DVDs simultaneously with my Pioneer (105) and my Sony DRU 500AX and have noticed that the Sony was somehow faster... I took a deeper look and realized it was actually twice faster... when it shouldn't be.

    Here's the deal:

the Pioneer is installed on a T-bird 1.4GHz, 512MB IDE 2 Master, win2k SP3 with Record Now Max version 4.00.

the Sony is installed on a P4 2.53GHz, IDE 2 slave, win2k3 SP3, with Record Now Max version 4.50.

They both use the same media: Optodisc General purpose DVD-R OR470-000-011-01.
I record the exact same files (8 files for a total of 4.37GB) and set both of them at the recording speed of 1x.

The Pioneer will display a 65 minutes time before completion.
So does the Sony at first, but once this one start burning, it suddenly drops at 30 minutes....

And the DVD-R is burned in about 30 minutes... Does Record Now Max or the Sony burner bypass the desired 1x speed? That seems very odd for me... I burned about 100 DVD's (both drive combined) and didn't have a single coaster yet... all of them were cheap optodisc dvd-r which are supposed to be burned at 1x only...

Has anyone got this kind of oddity?

  2. not sure how a05 is supposed to behave, but DRU500A(X) reportedly burns optodisc in 2x even though they're rated 1x. HOWEVER, if it takes more than 10 seconds to read the disc after you pop the disc in DRU500A(X) then your disc is still NOT in good shape.

  3. I had the same media : Optodisc General purpose DVD-R OR470-000-011-01
Nero suggested 2x and it burned at 2x (5/5 succesfull)
Maybe recordnow changes the speed to max during recording if it can - that might be intended or a bug.
The shop salesman told me that a lot of dvd-R media burns 1x on a pioneer and 2x on the sony ...
Media like : Leadtech Data general use or Sentinel General use.

  5. This has been the best part of the Sony drive for me. Two different sets of 1x certified media (Butterfly Media, and Ritek silver) have burned successfully at 2x using Nero, and I've literally burned over a 100 without any coasters that weren't self-induced. It really helps with the pocket book.

  6. So where does one buy this Optodisc General purpose "DVD-R OR470-000-011-01" media, do you have a link?

  8. Those Optodisc are blue and in jewel case. Shipping is also free.
I have a total count of 120 DVD's burned with those disc on both A05 and DRU 500 AX and had only 2 coasters with them. The two disc I used already had a visual defect on them (near by the edge). I ordered already 300 of those DVDs since they burn at 2x without any prob, checked them all and found 2 more without a visual defect. All the DVD's I burned play fine everywhere except on some older Toshiba drives and PS2.

IMO, 2 or 3% of defective DVDs are nothing for the bargain you get on those DVDs. It's one buck the piece with jewel case and free shipping from newegg. http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?description=17-131-706

Kinda glad the 500AX and Record Now screwed up the burning speed, I would have never figured out they would burn at 2x flawlessly.
