below is the guide ive been following to copy a dvd (pal) to dvd-r and to keep the original menu, however the final burnt disc didnt work, all i got was the 10 second intro (of the movie company) then the disc stopped,i tried again but tried to view the film through ifedit viewer it gave the error after it played the same short intro as "an illegal navigation command was encountered" i noticed that after i followed the guide when the new folder was made containing the new files they were not numbered VTS_01_0.IFO etc but VTS_03_0.IFO etc the film originaly was located on the vts_03 (4 parts in all) so why didnt ifoedit rename them to vts_01 ? the guide says they should of,but they werent, the files were called exactly the same as they were in the original folder.im not up to speed using ifoedit,i usualy create my own menus in spruceup.
the film is 3.76gig with the menu (VTS_03_0.VOB).
i looked at the guides on this website and found them a bit hard to follow.
i tried renaming the files to 1 instead of 3 but that didnt work either.
anyone notice what ive done wrong? or link me to a working (and easy
guide?
thanx a lot

With the help of this is a much requested guide you are able to save the extras and menu(s) on the dvd. The menu is relatively easy to capture because it doesn't take much room on the disc. This guide concentrates on capturing the menu, but with little adaptation you can use it to get the extras too.
Components needed:
- 10-15Gb of hard drive space )
- IfoEdit 0.95 (download from Doom9)
- IfoUpdate 0.53 (download from Doom9)
The project can be either easy or hard depending on whether the movie has to be compressed or not. DVD movie discs differ from each other and usually you have to improvise alot but when you get the basic idea you'll get through on 99% of the cases.
The easy way: With luck the movie (the movie itself) is so small no compression is needed. If this is the case, preserving the menu is easy.
1.) Copy the whole movie to hard drive using DVD Decrypter.
2.) Open IfoEdit and opent the largest .ifo file you copied with DVD Decrypter. Check which VOB ID's the movie uses by scrolling the lower window downwards a bit (see picture below).
After this is done click on "VOB Extras" and check the boxes the same way as in the picture below. Set the destination folder where the program will create the files and click "OK".
Select the suitable soundtrack and subtitles (see picture) and click "Strip it.
Choose the appropriate VOB ID's and again click "Strip it". This will take a while because the program is writing new .VOB, .ifo and other menu files needed to the chosen folder.
3.) Open the file VIDEO_TS.IFO which IfoEdit created and click on "Region free". The movie is now region free. )
4.) After this open the new VTS_01.IFO and click on "Get VTS Sectors". Click "OK" on all the questions following. If the total file size is less than 4.38Gb you can burn the movie. It's a good idea to test the movie with a dvd player software. If the movie plays, it probably works in a dvd player also. Sometimes the burning software will not burn a movie with all the extras removed even if they would work. In such case you can make an image file with IfoEdit every burning software accepts.
The hard way: You have been forced to compress the movie with, for example, CCE.. Here's an example of a possible situation:
I have the following files on the hard drive:
VIDEO_TS.BUP
VIDEO_TS.IFO
VIDEO_TS.VOB
VTS_01_0.BUP
VTS_01_0.IFO
VTS_01_0.VOB
VTS_01_1.VOB
VTS_02_0.BUP
VTS_02_0.IFO
VTS_02_0.VOB
VTS_02_1.VOB
VTS_02_2.VOB
VTS_02_3.VOB
VTS_02_4.VOB
VTS_02_5.VOB
VTS_02_6.VOB
VTS_03_0.BUP
VTS_03_0.IFO
VTS_03_0.VOB
VTS_03_1.VOB
The movie is contained in the files from VTS_02_1.VOB through VTS_02_6.VOB! I also have the files made with CCE and reauthorized with DVDMaestro in another folder on the hard drive:
VIDEO_TS.BUP
VIDEO_TS.IFO
VIDEO_TS.VOB
VTS_01_0.BUP
VTS_01_0.IFO
VTS_01_0.VOB
VTS_01_1.VOB
VTS_01_2.VOB
VTS_01_3.VOB
VTS_01_4.VOB
VTS_01_5.VOB
Because the names of the files (from VTS_01_1.VOB through VTS_01_5.VOB) created by DVDMaestro differ from the filenames on the original DVD they must be renamed (from VTS_02_1.VOB through VTS_02_5.VOB):
VIDEO_TS.BUP
VIDEO_TS.IFO
VIDEO_TS.VOB
VTS_02_0.BUP
VTS_02_0.IFO
VTS_02_0.VOB
VTS_02_1.VOB
VTS_02_2.VOB
VTS_02_3.VOB
VTS_02_4.VOB
VTS_02_5.VOB
Pay attention on this step! Next I remove from the original .VOB files the ones where the movie itself is contained. By this I mean the files from VTS_02_1.VOB through VTS_02_6.VOB! The following files remain:
VIDEO_TS.BUP
VIDEO_TS.IFO
VIDEO_TS.VOB
VTS_01_0.BUP
VTS_01_0.IFO
VTS_01_0.VOB
VTS_01_1.VOB
VTS_02_0.BUP
VTS_02_0.IFO
VTS_02_0.VOB
.
.
.
.
.
.
VTS_03_0.BUP
VTS_03_0.IFO
VTS_03_0.VOB
VTS_03_1.VOB
After this I replace the removed files with the ones made by DVDMaestro (the files from VTS_02_1.VOB through VTS_02_5.VOB). Now I have the following files in the folder where the original files used to be:
VIDEO_TS.BUP
VIDEO_TS.IFO
VIDEO_TS.VOB
VTS_01_0.BUP
VTS_01_0.IFO
VTS_01_0.VOB
VTS_01_1.VOB
VTS_02_0.BUP
VTS_02_0.IFO
VTS_02_0.VOB
VTS_02_1.VOB
VTS_02_2.VOB
VTS_02_3.VOB
VTS_02_4.VOB
VTS_02_5.VOB
VTS_03_0.BUP
VTS_03_0.IFO
VTS_03_0.VOB
VTS_03_1.VOB
Next I use IfoUpdate to open the original .ifo file and the reauthorized .ifo file made by DVDMaestro and click on "Update Ifo". The program updates the original .ifo file and deals with the VTS sectors. After this you can burn the files as they are if they don't take more room than the total of 4.38Gb. Before burning test the movie with a software playing dvd movies. If the extras still take too much room and you decide to preserve the menu only then follow the directions in "The easy way"section...
By now you probably got the hang of it; replace the .vob movie files with the new .vob files (which take less room) and update the .ifo file using IfoUpdate. The same procedures works with compressing extras.
If you would have wanted (or been able) to preserve the extras in "The easy way" you could accomplished it by unchecking the "AutoCopy Menu-files to destination" box in the "VOB Extras" part and in turn check the "Create new IFO files" box. Next you would have followed the instructions and would have been left with the files containing only the movie itself. After this you could have done as instructed in the"The hard way"section...
