Toshiba SD5700 & DVD-R problem

anybody have this player and tried to play DVD-R's with success? i haven't had any success and Toshiba just basically says it is a hit & miss thing. the DVD-R does play in my Denon 2800. bought this player because of the good reviews, not really sure now. if anybody else has any advice, please help. also, if i have to, any suggestions on a good progressive scan that also plays DVD-A? thanks all...

I don't have an answer, but am wondering if anybody who purchased this player knows whether the first zoom step is similar to the SD-1200. On the 1200, that first step is like 1.5x (definitely less than 2x), and allows nice resizing of widescreen to fill more space on a 4:3 TV.
