Before I convert captured DV-AVI files to MPEG-2 in TMPG, is there any benefit (quality-wise) in converting these Type 1 files to Type 2? I know there isn't any reason to do so out of compatibility (I'm not using VirtualDub in this process), but will it improve or not improve the quality of the encoding?

I'm sure you will get all kinds of responses but I'd say no. M$'s codec in DX6 was suspect but I've been happy with the one in DX8.1. I have tried capturing type 2 with main concept, panasonic and canopus codecs and I can't tell a dimes worth of difference between them. However, your mileage may vary.
