Ok, I bought a copy of Ulead MovieFactory 2, I imported the SVCD MPEG files (480x480) and had MF2 convert them to 720x480, it took almost 48 hours! the dvd VOBs it produced work great accept that it is 8.6+ GB, i tried to use DVD2One to shrink it down to fit it on one DVD, but MF2 created a title listing for each MPEG clip (which there were 4), DVD2One only lets you select ONE title, which puts me back at square one.. any ideas?

When i do that, MF2 only detects the movie as 43 minutes, which is the length of the first clip, i would just remaster it, but it took almost 2 days teh fist time..

In general, authoring tools should be doing authoring (i.e. multiples streams into VOBs and create menus, etc.)

Try to compress with a fast encoder. Tmpgenc is good and rather slow. CCE is excelent and rather fast. The new Newconcept mpeg encoder is good, fast and rather tricky (you can easily increase the size of the streams if you are not careful!!!).

Then, use an authoring tool that does not insist on re-encoding. Ulead DVDWorkshop is great for simple tasks (I use it for fast work and use Scenarist for "challenging" tasks, like multi-audio and subtitles plus complex chapter menus).
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

  5. Several hints:

    use faster encoder e.g. TMPGEnc

encode to 352x480 instead (half the file volume)

let MF2 create a menu with subtitles and you will only get one program chain, just check that first clip plays and you don't have to use the menu only if you want.

for a given DVD structure with your program chains you can convert it to one program chain using IFOEdit, but you need to be experienced in using that tool. The resulting DVD structure can then be compressed with DVD2ONE.

  6. OK, when MF2 encoded the video for you, did it encode directly to VOB files or MPEG files? Sorry, I'm not familiar with MF2.

If you still have all those MPEG files, what I would recommend is to download TMPGEnc (free if you don't use the MPEG2 encoding which you wont). In TMPGEnc under FILE and MPEG Tools you'll find a couple a AWESOME tools. One of those is the CUT/EDIT tab which allows you to join multiple MPEG files. In this case, if MF2 created MPEG files, you can just join all of them together. Then use the Simple Demux tab and demux the large MPEG file into an audio stream and video stream.

From here, you can either use IfoEdit to create a DVD for you which it will automatically create the IFO's and remux all the components to VOB files. Then you can just run the VOB's thru DVD2ONE or IC 7 to fit onto 1. The trick is that if you use join all your files together and create the IFO using IfoEdit, you get only one title. If you need chapters or menus, then you will have to use DVDMaestro or any DVD Authoring Tools to create the VOB and IFO files.

Next time you convert with Moviefactory remember to change the video bitrate and change also the video to mpeg audio. Use a bitrate calculator to calculate the average video bitrate that you should use.
