Where did you buy it for 40 bucks, thats a good price. I have an Acer 16X DVD rom and it only rips at 2.5X that suck ass.

My guess would be http://www.nexthardwareshop.com
they have the best prices on dvd-rom drives -
Thanks man. They have DVD-LI16X-R model for only $23 bucks I know thats not the LTD-166 but is this model still good will it ripp above 8X.

ripping speed can also depend on the dvd disc too. I have the lite-on 16x drive from nexthardware and i get rip speeds around 7x-8x on average. Been as high as 12x before

Does ANYONE have one of the Digital-Research/IOMagic/Cendyne 16X DVD's that rip faster than 2x? My problem isn't isolated, and I swear that while the drive may actually spin at 16x, reading DVD's it locks into 2x because that's 'fast enough'. How many people out there actually clock their drives

Many DVD-ROM drives are LOCKED to read CSS discs at 2x max. The Lite-on is not (neither is the Acer or the Pioneer, not sure about others). I got my Lite-on online from pricewatch (don't remember company went with the cheapest) for $30 including S&H.
Running winXP w/ DMA enabled and Adaptecs ASPI layer installed running DVD Decyptor, I normally rip at 5-8x for DVD-9 discs, and 6-10x for DVD-5 discs. However, for this one series I was backing up (DVD-5 disc) I ripped at 11x ave and 15.5x max! It took like 3min to rip the enter 4.7GB disc -
it was actually newegg.com... it was $40.99 but had free fed ex shipping
... but heck, i hadn't noticed that the OEM is even a dollar less

I bought my LITEON 16x Universal Buslink DVD ROM from Best Buy for $50. There was a $20 mail in rebate, and when the girl rang up the DVD ROM, she printed out TWO REBATES. One from Best Buy, and one from Universal Buslink. Both were for $20. I thought there had to be some type of mistake, but I sent both rebates in and after about 8 weeks, I got a $20 rebate check from Buslink, and I thought that Best Buy caught the error and I knew I still had a great deal, but about two weeks ago, I got a $20 rebate check for the Universal Buslink DVD ROM, lol....so I ended up getting a REAL..BEST BUY!Oh, and I didn't mention that I rip at between 10x-15.2x. I've never seen the speed go to 16x, but it usually remains constant at 12x, but a lot of the time rips at 15.2x. I rip a full movie in less then 5 minutes. That DVD ROM has to be my "BEST BUY' EVER...and for a little more then $10....It's still hard to believe. Best buy now has the very same DVD ROM for $60 with NO Rebates. I guess they are trying to make up what they lost for the double rebate error.

I have a 166S but it won't read DVD+RW. It starts well but after a few minutes (of a movie) it stops with a reading error.
Can anyone tell me if this is a problem with my unit or 166S just can't read +R(W) format?
TIA, -
@ Joepereira, I am willing to bet it is your DVD ROM. Even my Liteon DVD ROM which normally reads ANY DVD-R media in an instance, takes a about 20 seconds or so to read my VERBATIM DVD+R's. It reads them and plays them perfectly, but it just takes longer to initially read. I hear the laser scanning and scanning on the DVD+R's, where as I just insert a DVD-R and it plays fine. I remember reading that it is more difficult for DVD ROM's or even CD ROM's to read the +RW format, because of the format. There are a lot of people that have CD ROM's which can't read ANY RW format, but can read the R format perfectly. Your DVD ROM must be one of those that has a problem. I would try to see if there is some type of firmware update for your ROM. If there is, almost certainly, the update would include the ability to read more types of media.

I am wanting to get a new DVD-Rom as I think mine is messed up (also somewhat slow). Is this the same drive that has 10x and higher rip speed. http://www.compgeeks.com/details.asp?invtid=XJ-HD166S The reason I ask is that its a different model number (Xj instead of LTD) and I need to order some cables from them anyway so I would like to save on shipping. So, is it the same?
-
Disregard that last post, as I forgot that newegg has free shipping on that item.

I just got my Liteon 166 it rocks, it used to take me 40-45 minutes(d-9) to ripp with my Acer 16X, now I rip a D-9 movies between 10-15 minutes and a D-5 in 7-10 minutes thats incredible, Im hitting 10X with my Liteon, Im burning my Acer so much wasted time with that junk.

As a followup:
Has anyone got a Digital Research/IOMagic 16x to rip faster than 2x? I haven't found anyone that could. I'm stuck with a $40 2X DVD :P If this is the case, it's worth noting somewhere on the site, kinda like the DVD Olayers and the burners....DVDROM drives that only work at 1x, 2x, or 2.5xTo Be, Or, Not To Be, That, Is The Gazorgan Plan -
Try upgrading the firmware and and enable DMA, if you still have problems your DVD-rom might be capped then you should just take it back to the store you bought it from or sell it on EBAY and buy a liteon thats the best advice I can give you.
-
Ugh, I hate that phrase 'Enable DMA'. Even with DMA disabled and in PIO mode 4, you can get better than 2x. I get 2x when burning CD's at 52X while encoding in TMPG.
Cheap DVDROM drives don't have Firmare that's upgradeable. Techsupport just laughed(via a java chat window) at the prospect of firmware, and they told me to ake it back to the store, who wouldn't take it back because it had been 14 days.
My question still stands....has anyone ripped faster than 2x with these drives? And do we need a DVDROM section on VCDHELP, just like the DVDPlayers, that states ripping speeds? To Be, Or, Not To Be, That, Is The Gazorgan Plan -
I'm in trouble now. I have two LiteOn DVD drive D163 and just updated the firmware from the site mentioned above. I have two PCs and both have D163. One didn't have any improving, but decreased the ripping speed and the other one just DEAD. There was no light at all and the BIOS didn't detect it when boot.
Does anyone know how I can bring my DVD-ROM back to life again?
Thanks -

The problem stays the same with 165H: +RW cannot be read correctly. Tested with movies of about 4.36G, the NeroSpeed recognaizes 0,51G or 4,1G or 1,5G, but never the full 4,36G. The results are always consistents in the same burned disk, meaning after a burn it will always recognaize that disk as X.XXG.
When tested for data transfer rate, it read as fast as any pressed DVD-Video!!! But passing the X.XXG mark it gives me reading errors.
Could be a Motherboard<->DVD-Rom incompatibility ?!?!?
By now, I don't think I will do any more exchanges... -
Hey Guys. I've read a few posts about this drive and am just confused about one thing. Here in canada, all the stores I've checked have the LITE-ON LTD-163. Is this the same as the 166 in the US? If it isn't, has anyone got it to work successfully(I read in this post about vcdlover having probs with his 163) and rip at the same or equivalent speeds?
Thanks a bunch.
Cheers.
