Bombart, LTD163 and 166 are not the same. If you'll buy 163, please don't update the firmware. I have to throw mine in the trash. It worked perfectly at 8X (it was supposed to be 16X). If the firmware doesn't kill the drive, it'll decrease the reading speed.

    Please be adviced.

  2. I just got my 166s. Never put anything in like this, and was just wondering what the difference between slave and master slave was. The directions were not too clear.

    Cheers,

Whats this about Fimware up dates?
    i have a LITEON DVD-ROM LTD163D GHR3 and it takes about 40 mins to rip a DVD.
does a firmware update make it go faster? Because i wouldn't mind a fast rip

Please could somebody point me in the right direction it would be a big help

Hey Guys. I just got my lite-on 166s. It's faster than ripping with my Pioneer DVR-105. However, I never hit the speeds you guys are talking about. Also, the speeds are ALWAYS fluctuating. It gradually goes up to about 4X, then after a while to like 5X but is always fluctuating. The last rip, I constantly moved between like 3.1X and 6.5X.

So, how can I achieve CONSTANT HIGH(like 10x) speeds like you guys are getting.

DMA is enabled, I have latest aspi and I installed the latest firmware from the link posted in this post.

    Thanks a lot.

  8. Has anyone try the Toshiba SD-M1712 from nexthardwareshop? Can it rip dvd at double digit speed? I like it because it also reads DVD RAM disc too. If it rips any where close to the LiteOn speed, I will probably get that.

Thanks for the link Sord_Fish,have just flashed my liteon 163d and is now ripping at 7-8x although i have only tried 1 dvd so far.I do have one question though i am not sure what the best way to set up my 2 hard-drives pioneer 104 burner and of course my lite-on.Any input from others would be welcome. My current set-up is...

main hard-drive to primary ide master. (80 pin)
smaller hard-drive to primary ide slave (80 pin)
pioneer 104 to secondary ide master (40 pin)
liteon to secondary ide slave (40 pin)

  12. OK now im confused , can some one give a definative answer. I keep Hearing conflicting stories on the speed of the Lite-on 166s, whats the actual constant speed. i want to get one but i want to be certain, i only get about 3.5-4x(maybe 6 but very rare) on my Toshiba, and its been acting wierd, skipping when playing a DVD, which has me worried about corrupt or missing data when ripping now(any know what it could be acting like this) So if some can tell me a definate answer about the Lite-On ill order one, as my current ripping speeds is taking a lot of time.
