  1. I have recently purchased a cendyne 4x drive (recognized as Pioneer DVR-105) and I am trying to purchase some dvd-r media but I'm so confused. I'm thinking about using Ritek dvd-r's since they seem to be widely compatible and reasonably priced but I just wanted someone to assure me their wasn't another media type comparable that I was overlooking.

I mainly will be backing up my movies since my children seem to ruin one every week (fingers and scratches). This of course means I'll be using every bit of the disc's capacity as my burns will be 4.36 GB.

I was thinking about purchase the 50 pack of Riteks from Meritline with dual dvd cases and free shipping for about $60. Think this is a good choice, thanks.

  2. Yes, I have the exact same burner you do and the Ritek G03's work great. They only burn at 1x, but have yet to make a coaster.

  3. Hi eze

I too had the same problem you have. Picking the right and consistent media from a reliable place.

I read tons of reviews and there hasn't been a whole lot of great posts that deals specifically to the Pioneer A05 in combination with the 2X media which is what I was looking for. So from the few reviews that I did find, I ended up biting the bullet and bought a 25 PK of the 'true 2X' DVD-R from allmediaoutlet.com. They are the white top with purple dye bottom.

They are out of stock but I received them yesterday and I already burnt 5 discs and they have been working without any issues at all. Burnt them all at 2X and two of the discs, I filled the entire 4.3 GB and no problem with the edges being bad.

I primarily did some home videos that I captured with a Dazzle Hardware MPEG-2 encoder card and some light editting and then burn. Quality is extremely good and this weekend I will burn my first movie backup and I will post some updates.

The 25 pack of the media that I bought cost me $30 after tax and shipping.

  4. Yeah I saw those at mediaoutlet but its too bad that they are out of stock. I think I will end up going with the Riteks. But there was one dvd-rw that came with the drive when I bought it. Its a princo 1x dvd-rw and I have burned 3 different movies onto it (full 4.36gb) to test its compatibility and each time it works flawlessly on my pc-dvd and my stand alone dvd players. Just curious if anyone has even tried this lower grade media as opposed to Riteks?

I have used the Ritex G03 in my A05 and it works perfectly. I have used them in my sony stand alone and in my Ps2. The downside is that they do only burn at 1X but if you can handle the wait then they work perfectly

  6. I've always gottent those allmediaoutlet.com's 'true 2x' media (which are really TKD) and burn them at 2x with DVD Decypter and have zero problems. I once burnt a 4.6GB of data and the disc played fine from start to finish.

To bad they are out of stock (I'm like 1/2 way through my 50 pack).

If you want to take advantage of your speed with the A05 www.esbuy.com has Ritek G04 at $86 for 50. I just burned a spindle of 50 with no coasters except for errors that were completely my fault. Free shipping through UPS with a tracking number emailed to you when shipped.

  8. I also recently bought a Cendyne 4x burner (Pioneer DVR 105). I have only tried verbatim 2x disks and so far so good. But here's my very newbie question - my apologies - I see on the rima.com site that they have a listing for a 9.4GB DVD-R disk (Ritek DVD-R 9.4 GB, Double-Sided). Can you use that kind of disk in the Pioneer DVR 105? I have a number of movies that are longer than 4.3GB and would love to be able to burn them if possible. (I have a mac so DVD2one is out). I also read that Maxell is supposed to come out with a High Capacity 9.4 GB DVD-R this year. Does anyone have information about 9.4GB DVD-Rs?

  9. If I understand the meaning of the discs they are referring to on the prima website dual dvds is meaning each side of the disc is writeable ... 4.37gb per side ... flip over after half of movie is done. Is this right?

    Yes....

I have the Pioneer A04, I bought about 10 different kinds of generic and branded DVD-R's and found out that everyone of them played fine....I have yet to have a problem with any of them..from Princo, TKD, Ritek, Americal(generic), Optodisc, Primedisc, Prodisc, Memorex, Pioneer. If the 105/A05 is anything like the A04/104 all have played on my burner and my Sony DVP-NS315 and Toshiba SD-2800 and Toshiba SD-3800, on my friends Xbox and his PS2. Maybe I got lucky( I doubt it I ran all the media on each player) but in my experience most the media, generic or not plays fine so long as the player/ROM supports -R/+R discs.

I remember reading awhile back about this and I believe the general consensus is buy a few test discs and see what media works with your setup....burner/stand alone player.

How is the playback of 4X media on home DVD players?
I had read that there might be issues, depending on the age of the player used.

    Thanks!

    That is correct.

    Burn flip burn
    play flip play

Just like those old DVD's from the late 1990's that had Fullscreen version on one side and Widescreen on the the other.

Of course you Can only label/write on the center ring on those for ID purposes

I have a Pioneer C302D which is several years old and it plays 4x media fine. I have had no problems with the 4x in several players with my Pioneer being the oldest player I have access to.

  14. I've used about 25 of the princo 1x blanks... no coasters until the last two... those work fine in pc but not in stand-alone. re-burned those two directly to the next two on the spindle and they worked fine. hopefully they won't go bad over time...

  15. I really like those "white princo's", i bought like 6-7 50 packs
so far the the 104 and a 105, never failed me yet, with all
the new conversion programs out there now, its getting hard
to make a coaster...unless you delete or forget something...
