I have seen ZERO on a next gen burner. I can't really justify upgrading to just a 4x.
Has anybody heard anything about a 8x DVDR burner?
I know last year a company announced a laser capable of writing at 8x

Heard that as well, except i heard that it was going to be a 16x speed.
I think it was Mitsubushi Electronics that had invented a New laser that was capable of burning at 16xspeed.
That would mean that a Full DVD-r would be done in about 3 and a half minute's.
And they expected the first burners to appear sometime next year.
Guess we'll just have to wait and see. -
according to a pioneer guys the dvr-A06 should be out on april-may 03....so in few months....it should write 8x dvd-r and 4x dvd-rw
so let's wait....will see -

That is the +RW/R development via Philips. Not sure re the -RW/R format.
Philips are also tied up with Benq which could mean volume, cheap units quite soon.

But is it worth the extra cost of the media just to save a few minutes off the burn time? How many people are using 4x media now with their 4x burner?
-
I haven't seen 4x media except mail order (with plenty of 1x on the store shelves). That might have to change before 4x let alone 8x gets popular?
Cendyne/Pioneer 105 & 104 with a Dazzle* Hollywood DV-Bridge. -
Have a 2x burner, buy 1x media.
Occasionally I will burn 3 or 4 discs a day so it's almost worth it for the faster media... but then again I'm pretty cheap so I'll probably go with what's cheapest and seems to be working, same as for CD-r's.
If 8x media was like $6.00 compared to $0.70 for 1x, I'd definitely go for the 1x. -
Same here will buy the cheep disc in the store I have a AO4 and just bought a DRU500AX to get get better deal's in the store like at best buy they will have the same brand on sale one will be DVD-R and the other will be DVD+R so this way I can buy both and get rebate's on both. Well for 8X and 16X burner I'm all for faster DVD burner's but the media has to come down before people start to buy it.
-
Right now I only buy 2x media (~$1.10ea) because I don't think the extra cost of 4x media is worth it. When 4x media comes down in price you can burn a full disc in ~15min (takes me 20~28min for most 2x burns, after all most discs aren't full).
When the 6x or 8x drives come out media is going to be expensive, picky (ie. lots of coasters) and more than likely hard to find.
As a general rule with computers/technology no matter when you buy you're going to get screwed down the road by better/cheaper/faster devices. So I really wouldn't worry about it. -
How much do you think 8X media will cost like 8 bucks a disc not worth buying an 8X burner for another 2 years when 8X media will be where 1X media is now. Ill stick with my 4X buner for now.

Seraphic.
or you can see it my way. when 8x comes out, soon Ritek will discontinue 4x discs and just manufacture 8x ones, that gives better margin, just as after the 2x to 4x 'jump'. pushing up prices for good cheep media.
Now i can only get Princo 1x disc at the price i uesd to pay for my beloved Ritek 2x ones.Well, I am the slime from your video.

Uh-huh...
And just how much is this much-ballyhooed Blu-Ray thing going to cost, and what new set of draconian usage restrictions are we going to have to waste time and effort trying to get around before the thing will be of any use?
There are a lot of people out there who are only just now beginning to make the transition from VHS to DVD. Blu-Ray may appear on the market in the next couple of years, but I assure you, it will not render current DVD technology obsolete for quite a few years after that. -
The DVD Forum gave their seal of approval last week to Blu-Ray and it WILL be backward compatible(all current DVD players). To the question of price?Sure Blu-Ray will be expensive at first but so were the first Panasonics and Pioneers,a year ago they were $600USD now they are less than $300.

Now can you pick up 40x Burners for under $40, and everyday price (not sale price) of CD-R is $0.30 a piece.
Same goes for DVD-R. I paid $802 for my A03 pre-ordered, $17 for TDK 1x DVD-R media. And just look at the prices now.
Evolution is a fact of life.
I may a 4x DVD-R burner once the 8 or 16x ones come out, but I'll hold my breath on that blue-ray thing.
When blue ray comes, it won't play on anything, which means masses of people will have to buy another player. Many people still own VCR's and can't understand why they should get a DVD player insteadI don't see Blue Ray going any place soon with consumers. DVD is just now huge, even though the technology is over 10 years old. These things take a while to catch on.
Blue ray is ideal for holding HDTV material. HDTV has been around for a few years (5-6?). It still doesn't have the mass market appeal techies thought it would. Plus it's growth has been close to idle for almost 2 years. Blue Ray and HDTV are still a good 5 years + away from mass market, HDTV coming first of course. -

MS support won't make or break a format. I'd say a large portion of people here use DVD-R with their Pioneer or Sony drives ... which seem to be the most common. Cheap media I'd bet is the reason for this.
WMA was shoved down our throats by MS but MP3 is still the preferred format for audio... MS back pedaled and added support.
The consumer will drive the format in the end. Companies may make the mistake of changing thier product lines but may find their sales in a slump.
