I create home movies of my son - 1st birthday today (17 Feb), whoo-hooo and would like the ability to send mpegs to my family rather than stick on a cd/dvd and post.
I have a mailbox limit on my e-mail so...
...does anyone know of an application myself and each of my family can install where we can mail up to say 1gb of data?
    Thanks in advance,
    Will

  5. for a gig i would also say ftp server, but i would split it up first winrar or hjsplit.so if something happends you dont have to start all over.
you do relize that uploading a GB will take a while.
for me it takes near 20HRs with 115Kbps max upload on my cable.

    I tried this with Kazaa.
I gave it a name only me and my brother would recognise, he searched and nothing came up.
    Same principle with winmx right?
    Thanks,

I'm trying to avoid anything other than elecronic means, thanks
1gb would be worst case, most are around 400/500mb.

Yes, but a bit easier. There are 'chat rooms' within the WinMX service that both of you could 'meet in'. Once there, he could 'browse' your files and start to dl the one he wants.

Yeah, but I'm on 512kb broadband so it's not really a problem, thanks

512k broadband is the max theoretical download - upload us about a quarter/third of that.

My max upload with BT Openworld broadband is about 25-30Kb/sec - but for some reason I can only get those speeds with multiple uploads. One user will probably draw about 20kb/s i.e. about 1 meg a minute.

    Sounds ideal.
I have winmx installed but hardly used it, I'll give it a try.

Try the speedtest to see what you can do:

    Yeah, understand that
I was meaning it tends to be on encoding anyway and as I'm paying £19.99 a month for unlimited it ain't a problem financially!

I've had some problems running p2p software and TMPGEnc before: synchronising data transfer tends to be a bit screwed by processor intensive applications i.e. TMPGEnc.

Make sure the p2p and encoding files are on different hard drives. Just a tip.

I've just had a moderator from my ISP reply to my post, apparently my upload speed is 256kb.
I've done the test before and was pleased with the results, I'll do it again when I go home for lunch and see.

    Silky,
Its UP TO 256kb. Taint necessarily so that you will make it, and if the party on the other end doesn't have a high speed connection, they'll still DL at whatever they do have, or a portion thereof. I DL'd 7 .iso's yesterday, 5 to 700 Meg each, and a couple DL's started me at dialup thruput, with time to finish of 22 to 30 hours. Find a new mirror site, and DL was 134 KB on 1 and 90 KB on a simultaneous transfer, about 214 KB X 8 bits, about 1.7 Megabits/second on a 1.54 Mb cable conn. However, my upload is 256 Kb max / 8 bits per Byte, 32 KB/second. A megabyte is 321 seconds ideally, 5 and 1/3 min per Megabyte which 500 Megabytes is the better part of 5 hours to upload. Now if your relations have hi-speed ( 1.54mbs, cable ), they can only DL as fast as you UpLoad. Your ISP probably limits your mail box at 20 Meg or less, so that's out. That means you DO have to set up an FTP service between you to even approach rated speeds.
If they're on dialup, all bets are off. Iwas often timed out ( 12 hours ) on 60 or 70 Meg DLs, with 56 k modem at 51 something connection.
You sure you dont want to snail mail them a CD?
    Sorry.

Silky, you're still going to have to 'upload' no matter where it goes to: eithere p2p or ftp. I still think that p2p is the way for you, but don't understand your reluctance to use snail mail - they could have been there by now!

Nope, you're right, you don't understand
This is going to be a regular occurance, and I don't want to be burning cd's every other day when I could be on all four's chasing my 12 month old son around the living room pretending to be a dog!
Someone mentioned it's a maximum of 256kb and yes, I appreciate this
It's no problem - time is not an issue, my friend has broadband and regulary leaves his computer on, as I will through the day when I upload the data I'm sending him.
    Thanks for the suggestions.
A pal suggested mirc, but didn't expand.
Anyone have any thoughts on this or even what the hell it is?

Yep, will give this and maybe winmx a go, thanks.
You have any recommendations as to free ftp programs?
I have Terrapin FTP but I thought this was simply to upload to webspace, clearly I have no idea how to use them

  24. Download Mirc.
    Then just follow these steps:
    1) Connect to the same server
    2) Use the command: /dcc send {nickname} {file1} {file2} {file3} ... {fileN} Sends the specified files to nick

But if you're capturing and then encoding, the time to burn a CD pales into insignificance. Are you sure the anti-CD thing isn't a little Northern penny pinching???

    I don't know what's more worrying;
    1) The fact you have me sussed or
    2) You deduced I was a Northerner when my location reports me as in Southern Ireland
