best set up

i have just bought a new computer.....my goal is to be able to help family and friends get their vhs tapes in order and put on dvd.... the new computer comes with cd-r/w, dvd-r/w.....

in reading forums q and a for 3 days now there are many opinions regarding how to accomplish editing video......

here are my questions:

1. other than the computer please list what hardware would be needed to accomplish my goal of editing and copying vhs, dvd, cd, clips as well as being able to put in titles and wipes and such....

2. in regards to using a camera as a thru put device, what are the advantages and disadvantages of this....

3. i want high quality dvd's , not broadcast quality but at least as good as vhs tape.....i am guessing that the order of video quality would be vhs, vcd, then dvd....seems about right...

4. in regards to s/w i have already d/l many programs trying to get familiar with them before new computer comes and seems like there is no one does all...if there is i missed it...there also seems to be lots of s/w that does the same thing...can someone clarify the s/w issues for me ....i know thats a big question but i think many would like to know the answer...the whats what....

please help me with these answers...either one or all i would certainly pass on any info in the future that helps others....
