vcr/tv to divx/vcd

i am new to this,i can convert a dvd to a divx cd
i think its great
i am looking for a program that will capture my vcr/tv input and convert them to divx and vcd
have tried a few and with no luck and others very complicated
i have an ati all_in_wonder 128 pro video card with the vcr and cable hooked up to it
when i capture in mpeg2 it gives me a file with the extention of .mp2 not mpeg2-quality good but no way to convert itto any file
can record in mpeg1 with extention of .mpg -works but not that good of quality and no way to get the sound after converting to avi with the gui from nickys page,dvd2avi
i have spent the last 4 weeks after work trying to make this work up very late
i dont know where to go from here
