  1. I have backed up dozens of my movies with no problems using the various tools available. I just came across my first "impossible" rip.... I am trying to backup "James Bond - From Russia With Love". It is a rare out of print MGM USA dvd from 1997 so I really want it to work.

The dvd plays fine on my computer dvd-rom and stand alone apex player, BUT once the vobs are ripped (both smartripper and decrypter) to my hard drive they become "corrupted". When I play them with powerdvd the image becomes completely blocky and green, and freezes. Only the first two movie vobs are affected. I tried processing with IFOedit and burning to a dvd-rw to see if it would work on the stand alone, but the same problem occurs. It gets through the menus fine, the movie starts and then green snow!

I have never seen this before, any suggestions are appreciated!

I am assuming it is too big to do a full disk back-up huh? I am having trouble with The Ten Commandments and backing it up. The second disc starts at chapter 30, not over at 1. IfoEdit doesn't work and neither does DVD2One. I guess re-encoding is my option. But back to your problem. Maybe back up the whole disc and then only process the Vobs. Maybe ripping just the Vobs did something to corrupt the first two.

  3. Sorry I forgot to mention that I tried to process using DVD2ONE, as well as tmpgenc, in addition to doing multiple rips in movie mode and file mode....nothing. (tmpenc won't begin encoding - it sees the problem with the first vob) I would understand if the original was corrupted, but the problem occurs during the rip, with no indication of unreadable blocks. Very strange.

I'm currently backing up my entire collection of James Bond movies, all of them in fact.
I'll do this one in the next few days and let you know how I go on.
Remind me in a week if you're interested in knowing the outcome

Weird, it looks like the 2 first vobs, although they were ripped are still CSS encrypted to me. maybe the key it uses is the wrong one for those two vobs. Never came across that problem, but when ripping check if it changes key during the rip, if it does, write down the Second key and process the 2 first vobs using that key (by entering it manually)

I've had this problem several times. You need to try ripping on a different DVD-ROM drive. This has worked for me everytime. I have two systems (P4 & P2) that are networked together. I always rip on the P4. But, when I have a problem vob, I rip the problem vob on the P2. Then copy it to the P4 where I do the encoding. I figure the drive on my P4 must be out of alignment or something. I've had to do this three times in the past year.

Check the VOBs in VirtualDub v1.4.13 which can read VOB files. Then scroll through the file to see if there is a bad frame or frames. If not, then save as an AVI and re-encode with TMPEGnc.

If there are bad frames then save the good portions of the VOB as AVIs and join before re-encoding to MPEG. You might see a glitch in the final product but all is not lost.

  8. Do you know anyone with DVDXCOPY to try it for ya????

I doubt you would want to spend 99 just for one movie, but I would recommend using it anyway.

    Just a suggestion
