    have G4 - 500Mhz -AGP - DVDR-105 - OSX10.2.3 - Ilife with Imovie3 and IDVD3

Can play DVD movies - Can burn CDs - have been unable to burn DVDs

Have one Imovie3 - length 56 minutes - 59 minutes needed on DVD

    Am using PioneerDVS-RP47BF disk (DVD-R 1X-4Xspeed SP120MN/4.7GB)

logically burn time should be 15 minutes. system tells me it will take 153 minutes to burn. then it finishes rendering and goes into encoding. first time system got stuck with 123 minutes left to go. Second try system got stuck at the with 147 minutes left to go.

i divided the movie in 25 chapters, and IDVD set that up as 4x6 + 1x1. Any idea as to what I might be doing wrong ?
I called Apple they told me to try a different blank DVD. That did not solve the problem.

First, your drive doesn't burn at 4x, does it? The 105 I though was only 2x.

I bet money that you haven't set your energy saver settings to "never". That seems to kill iDVD left and right. Make sure nothing at all is trying to sleep while your disk is burning.

I have a dvdr 103 and when I updated the firmware, I read that the 2x drives can write to 4x media but at 1x. Kinda dumb but that is what I read on Apple's site. You're better off using 2x media.

Ok thanks for the help - please keep the tips coming. at $9.00 a disk i would prefer to wait a while longer before trying my luck once more. In the meantime Apple is now selling disks around $5 !!!

    OK DVDR-105 is a 4X drive. will a 2x disk work in a 4X drive? I thought a 4X disk would work in a 2X drive. But, I also thought that a 2x disk would not work in a 4X drive?

Yes, my sleep option was set to never due to the many postings advising to do so. However, i did find that the option "put hard disk to sleep" was on. I just turned that off now.

    problem resolved -
took another 56 minutes Imovie2 project, imported it into I movie3, did not create any chapters, exported it to IDVD3.
was able to burn good DVD on first try. But, process took almost 3 hours.

will enter another post with details
