I quite understand how to encode audio and video for creating a CVD, but I want to know the particulars about the structural disc differences between SVCD and CVD. You know, MPEG2 vs. MPEGAV, SVD..., Scandata..., VBV, that sort of thing. Also, what is the particular difference codewise between SVCD subs and CVD subs?
Anyone, anyone?

The CVD and SVCD standards are almost identical. Besides the obvious difference in resolution, the rest of the variations are basically non-issues and won't affect playback. I think the volume label is different, I assume its something like CVD instead of SUPER_VIDEOCD. I think some of the files may be named differently, though the file itself is the same. I remember reading all this in the Vcdimager manual, but the latest version doesn't really say much.
The CVD standard is so close to the SVCD standard that for all intents and purposes, you can basically just assume that the SVCD standard supports both 480x480/576 as well as 352x480/576.
As far as subtitles go, the Vcdimager manual does give some technical info. For info about the SVCD format you could download philipis svcd designer and read its manual. -
This guide can help you understand the differences between CVD and SVCD:
